  2. Objective • Discuss the contributions to current day Nevada of the Native Americans and Mormons

Last Week • Nevada is the history of a struggle between man vs. man and man vs. the environment • Nevada is an archeologically rich area • Nevada is in an area known as the Great Basin • Anasazi were the first known inhabitants • Indian rock art – petroglyphs and pictographs • Spanish were the first Europeans • English and French came to the Southwest mainly for economic reasons……..? • Nevada in Spanish means………….?

  4. Last Week • Massive Westward migration beginning @ 1800 because of…..? • Famous Settler Parties • Bartleson-Bidwell 1841 – proved it could be done • Donner Party 1846 – this disaster put a temporary halt to westward migration until………..what happened?

  5. Native Americans in Present Day Nevada • Anasazi – advanced building dwellers. Hatred of Mormons • “…the Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary…” • Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs – 1838 • This extermination order resulted in the deaths of at least 60 Mormons as ell as the rapes of dozens of Mormon women and girls. • This extermination order was not repealed by the Missouri government until 1976!
