  1. Doing What Is Right Text: I Pet. 4:12-19 Scripture Reading: Mt. 10:35-39

  2. Intro II Pet. 3:1-2 1. This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2. that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles. • Peter talks of the identification and relationships of saints • to God and the world: • I Pet. 1:14-16:Saints are to “be holy” as God is holy! • I Pet. 2:5-10:Saints are God’s holy priests, holy nation, and His own people of mercy. • I Pet. 4:1-6:Saints choose to serve God and live a life of morality (Live differently). What is a saint, a Christian? Doing What Is Right

  3. Intro • Names identify, and the name Christian identifies a • special people to God • Acts 11:26: Christians are disciples (followers of Christ). • Acts 26:28: Christians are persuaded (convinced by truth). • I Pet. 4:12-19: God defines Christians as those who do “what is right!!” Saints are people who are “doing what is right” and entrust their souls to a “Faithful Creator!” Doing What Is Right

  4. People Who Pay Any Price to Follow Christ I Pet. 4:12-16 12. Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; 13. but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. 14. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15. Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; 16. but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. Acts 5:40-42 James 1:2-4 Doing What Is Right

  5. People Who Pay Any Price to Follow Christ • Christianity is “cross-bearing” – Mt. 16:24-26 • Must deny self and give some things up • Christianity is worth whatever price we have to pay – • Mt. 10:37-39; Lk. 14:26-27 • Have to sometimes give up family and friends – Mt. 10:35-36 • Persecution will happen (II Tim. 3:12) – Acts • Apostles first – Acts 4-5 • Stephen – Acts 7 • Church – Acts 8 • James and Peter – Acts 12 • Paul and his traveling companions – Acts 13-28 (Phil. 3:7-8) Christians pay any price for Christ! Doing What Is Right

  6. People with Ethical Guidelines I Pet. 4:15 15. Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; Phil. 2:15 15. so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, Doing What Is Right

  7. People with Ethical Guidelines • People may suffer for the wrongs they commit – • I Pet. 2:20 • No credit to endure just-deserved punishment, but if punished for being a Christian, God is glorified and the saint will be “blessed” (I Pet. 4:14). • Christians will obey the laws of the land and laws of God • in treatment of others • I Pet. 2:13-19: If we submit to authority in obedience we will not be found guilty as “evildoers” and thus if we suffer, will suffer unjustly. • “This finds favor with God” (I Pet. 2:20). Christians live morally and justly to be “blameless and innocent” & “above reproach!” Doing What Is Right

  8. People Who Have Obeyed the Gospel I Pet. 4:17-19 17. For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18. AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER? 19. Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. “What will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?” Doing What Is Right

  9. People Who Have Obeyed the Gospel “What will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?” • II Thess. 1:7-9: They receive: • “Retribution” (“Eternal punishment” – Mt. 25:46) • “Eternal destruction” (“Eternal fire,” “Eternal punishment” – Mt. 25:41, 46) • Eternal “separation” from God (“Eternal punishment” – Mt. 25:41, 46) The gospel – I Cor. 15:1-8 • Commands to obey the gospel (I Pet. 1:22): • Once someone has heard and believed (Acts 2:37) one needs to repent and be baptized (Acts 2:38; 22:16). • One needs to confess Christ as Lord and the Son of God before baptism (Acts 8:36-38; Mt. 16:16, 18). • One needs to live a faithful life until death (Rev. 2:10). Christians are those who have obeyed the gospel! Doing What Is Right

  10. People In God’s Family I Pet. 4:17, 19 17. For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 19. Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. Doing What Is Right

  11. People In God’s Family • I Tim. 3:15: The church is God’s household • Baptism for the forgiveness of sins adds one to the church – Acts 2:47 (NKJ) • Those who obey the gospel are added to the household of • God and become His children! • Gal. 3:26-27: “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” • Rom. 8:14-17: As children of God we are “fellow heirs” with Christ! Christians are those “led by the Spirit of God” and “in the household of God!” Doing What Is Right

  12. Conclusion God defines Christians as those who “do what is right” despite personal consequences! There is honor in identifying with Christ’s name – I Jn. 3:1-2 (We will see Him as He is!) • Those who pay the price for Christ in this life will be • rewarded with God’s home (eternal rest) • Mt. 25:34; Rom. 8:18; I Pet. 1:4; Rev. 2:10: Heaven awaits those who “remain faithful till death!” • Those who do not obey the gospel will pay the price for • eternity! • Mt. 25:41, 46; II Thess. 1:8-9; Rev. 20:14-15; 21:8:Hell waits for the “unbelieving!” Doing What Is Right

  13. Conclusion Can you afford not to become a Christian? (Mt. 16:26: Anything worth losing one’s soul?) What will it cost you? Trials of this life? An eternity of suffering? Have you paid the price to be a Christian? (The reward of eternal life awaits!) Doing What Is Right

  14. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
