  1. Unusual Birth, Infant Abandoned, Survives Ordeal • Infant Abandoned- Abandoned by both of his fathers (Poseidon and Aegeus) at birth, raised in secrecy because he would have been killed if he was found. Unusual Birth- Theseus had two fathers at birth These are Theseus’ two fathers, Poseidon and Aegeus

  2. Theseus: As He Grows, He Shows Heroic Potential • Theseus is not afraid of Heracles when he appears wearing the lion skin, even though everyone else ran away • At age fifteen he was able to lift the rock that Aegeus put over the sword and sandals that he left for Theseus • He decided to travel by land to Athens to see Aegeus, even though it was much more dangerous than the sea route • He was able to escape many criminals he encounters on his journey (such as Sinis (tree-bender) and Corynetes (club-carrier)) Ali, Marissa, and Kelly

  3. Performs Tasks and Kills Monsters Theseus volunteered to complete many tasks. His first task is to lift up a hollowed rock when he is able to, and make his way back to Athens.. Theseus had also killed many beasts. The first was the sow of Crommyon Phaea, an offspring of the monster Typhon. One of the other monsters he killed was the Minotaur, the half man half bull beast. He had killed this Minotaur inside the Labyrinth, where it had been placed so it would not terrorize people anymore.

  4. Makes an Area More Civilized One example of this is, Theseus encountered Periphetes and killed him, then taking his club. By killing the dangerous murderer travelers passing through could not be killed by his bronze club anymore. By taking the life of robbers and murderers such as Periphetes, Sinis and Scieron he made the passage from Troezen to Athens safe for all travelers.

  5. Theseus: Comes Face-to-face with Death Theseus and his friend King Perithoüs venture to the underworld to kidnap Queen Persephone. However, Hades pulls a trick on them, offering them food and a seat. When they take their seat, Theseus and Perithoüs find themselves in the Seat of Lethe (Forgetfulness), to which they are bound. They forget their purpose and everything about their former lives. Fortunately for Theseus, his cousin Heracles rescues him, and Theseus escapes the clutches of Death. 6. Theseus: Returning from Danger • His father Aegeus jumps off the cliff after not seeing the white flag when he returns from killing the minotaur • Marrying Ariadne brought him suffering because she kills herself after falling in love with Hippolytus

  7. Theseus: Makes an Error in Judgment and is Exiled… • Theseus goes off to experience his own adventure. • He and Peirithous go off to Sparta to kidnap and marry daughters of Zeus. • While on adventure, they travel to the Underworld to kidnap Persephone. There they were tricked by Hades and had to be saved. • The Spartan invasion occurs in the city of Athens. • Theseus is hated by the Athenians for causing the invasion. • Out of fear for his life, Theseus decides to move to the island of Scyrus. There he hoped to receive the hospitality of its king. • However, the king (Lycomedes) decides to go down a different route, he kills Theseus. • Lycomedes is jealous of Theseus’ reputation, and that’s why he pushed Theseus off a cliff.

  8. Theseus’s Death The Athenians were outraged with Theseus for starting a war and letting the Spartan invade their homeland. They would refuse Theseus his throne and not let him come back in peace. Theseus went to the land of Scyrus where he thought they would accept him but they actually despised him. The king was jealous of him and tricked him into climbing up a rocky cliff to see the beautiful view and then unexpectedly the king pushed Theseus off the cliff.

  9. Theseus Compare & Contrast Heracles and Theseus Heracles Managed to work his way through twelve difficult labors Took down Cerberus with his bare hands Even after the completion of the second labor with the assistance from Iolaus, King Eurystheus did not count his achievement. Hercules continued trying and completed the next labor. Hercules demonstrated courage when he returned to Ilium after his self imposed exile. Strength • Easily lifts the large rock that has his father’s gifts laying underneath when he was only 15. • Captured the Bull of Marathon alive and walked with it through the street. • Shows courage when he decided to not take the safe route by sea to obey Aegeus’s command, and instead take the much tougher land passage. Courage
