This study explores how manganese addition affects the survival of Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1 under different environmental conditions, including fermentative, aerobic, and aerobic with haem respiration. Conducted at 30°C, the research involved measuring the survival rate of exponential-phase cells in MRS medium after exposure to plumbagin. The significant impact of manganese on cell survival was evaluated using statistical analysis (P<0.05, t-test), providing insights into the role of trace elements in fermentation processes and the viability of beneficial microbes.

Effect of oxygen utilization and manganese addition on Lb. plantarum WCFS1. The graph shows the survival of exponential-phase cells of Lb. plantarum WCFS1 grown in MRS medium with (filled bars) and without (open bars) added manganese, under fermentative, aerobic, aerobic with haem and respiratory conditions at 30 oC after exposure to plumbagin (100 µg ml). Samples were taken at 60 min and the number of c.f.u. ml−1 was counted and expressed as log(N/N0). *Significant difference between values with and without added manganese (P<0.05, t test).
