Need for Horizontal Directional Boring and Trenchless Replacement

Trenchless repair or replacement is better than conventional methods, as it eliminates the need for destruction of construction to replace the damaged pipes and it also limits the exposure to health and environmental risks caused by sewer line excavations.

  1. Need for Horizontal Directional Boring and Trenchless Replacement Directional drilling or directional boring is used by oil companies for extraction of oil from underground reserves. Directional drilling is required in cases, when targeted reservoir is not in vertically downward position. Directional boring is also known as horizontal directional drilling, and it is commonly used technique in construction industry. For this, there is a three step process which should be followed. In first step, a pilot hole is drilled from one surface point to other along the directional path. Then in second step, this bore is widened to a larger diameter, which can allow the installation of pipeline. In third step, pipeline is pulled in the hole to form a continuous underground pipe. Directional boring method is specially suitable for installation of utility pipelines and conduits. It is also used when it is required to lay pipeline under rivers, roads and existing structures. When it is not possible to adopt traditional methods, directional drilling is used. There are many advantages of directional boring, such as, it reduces soil disturbance, also it reduces contamination of groundwater. For residential and commercial constructions, safety is very important, and therefore, reduction in contamination of groundwater means safety. Another advantage of directional boring is that it is safer for members of construction crew. Directional boring also protects ecosystem and nearby areas, and if trenching method is used then bad weather can affect your work schedule but it does not have much effect on underground drilling. Term directional boring is referred in cases when the crossing length is hundreds of feet but

  2. Horizontal directional drilling describes large sized works. For the purpose of small jobs, smaller and portable equipment are used, which are capable of applying thrust force. If it is required to lay down a water line in your house, then you can search for directional bore waterline near me. A method used to repair sewer pipe without destructing and removing portions of foundation, walls is called trenchless sewer replacement method. In trenchless repairing method, existing pipe is internally restored, and failed pipe is used as host. Instead of costly trench digging and then repairing of pipe by conventional methods followed by restoration, trenchless method is less expensive. For such repairs, existing plumbing and access points are tapped, for restoring drainage pipes from inside and it has lesser impact on the property. For carrying out the work of repair or replacement, firstly sewer lines are inspected and cleaned, and then a flexible tube called liner is installed in to existing drainage pipes. This liner is made of epoxy-saturated tube, which hardens after insertion and hence forms a new pipe within old pipe. This new pipe is sealed and is free from previous problems, which were present in old pipe. Before starting the work of trenchless repair, toilet is removed and then reinstalled after repair. Trenchless repair or replacement is better than conventional methods, as it eliminates the need for destruction of construction to replace the damaged pipes and it also limits the exposure to health and environmental risks caused by sewer line excavations. Time required to complete the work of replacement is according to the number of liners to be replaced. It needs one day to replace one line and if there are five lines to be replaced then five days will be required for work completion. But, on commercial level, there are two to four lines are replaced per day. One of the benefits of trenchless repair is that, while doing the work, it is possible for residents to stay at home, because, repair work is done one by one and any one of the utilities are kept working, so that residents can use it. Liner used in this method is flexible and therefore it can navigate through bends, plumbing connections, and even where there are diameter changes. When this liner hardens after insertion, then this is completely sealed and becomes solid, and hence locks out all the leakages and forms a new pipe. This new liner has a life of more than forty years and its surface is smoother than many materials used in old pipes, and it also has better flow capacity.
