  1. HPC TOP 5 STORIES Weekly Insights into the World of High Performance Computing

  2. HPC AND AI HAVE PAVED THE WAY FOR GROUNDBREAKING DISCOVERIES IN SCIENCE, MEDICINE, AND OTHER FIELDS…

  3. PROVING THAT AI IS THE FUTURE OF SUPERCOMPUTING…

  4. TOP 5 HERE ARE THE “TOP FIVE’ STORIES HIGHLIGHTING WHAT’S HOT IN HPC AND AI

  5. TOP 5 1. Making Containers Easier with HPC Container Maker 2. How Do I Understand Deep Learning Performance? 3. White House Transforms to Silicon Valley for a Day 4. Interactive HPC- Call for Submissions 5. Pawsey Adds NVIDIA GPUs to Its Free HPC Cloud Service

  6. 1 MAKING CONTAINERS EASIER WITH HPC CONTAINER MAKER HPC Container Maker (HPCCM) is an open-source project that addresses the challenges of creating HPC application containers. HPCCM encapsulates into modular building blocks the best practices of deploying core HPC components with container best practices, to reduce container development effort, minimize image size, and take advantage of image layering. Available on GitHub, HPCCM makes it easier to create HPC application containers by separating the choice of what should go into a container image from the specification details of how to configure, build, and install a component. This separation also enables the best practices of HPC component deployment to transparently evolve over time. BLOG

  7. 2 HOW DO I UNDERSTAND DEEP LEARNING PERFORMANCE? There’s a lot of confusion out there about deep learning performance. How do you measure it? What should you measure? The simple answer: PLASTER. The not so simple reality: “Hyperscale data centers are the most complicated computers the world has ever made — how could it be simple?” NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang explained at NVIDIA’s GPU Technology Conference earlier this year, before cramming each of the factors that drive this performance into that single acronym BLOG

  8. 3 WHITE HOUSE TRANSFORMS TO SILICON VALLEY FOR A DAY The summit also held break-out sessions around issues like AI R&D, workforce development, regulatory barriers and sector-specific AI applications. A range of sectors were represented from food and agriculture and health care, to transportation and energy. NVIDIA, known for its visual computing and AI tech, was represented by Ian Buck, the company's vice president of the accelerated computing business unit, who's no stranger to addressing government about AI. In fact, Buck testified before the House IT subcommittee on Feb. 14 to provide AI recommendations and expertise. ARTICLE

  9. 4 INTERACTIVE HPC: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Interactive exploration and analysis of large data sets, interactive preparation and debugging of large-scale scientific simulations, in-situ visualization, and application steering are compelling scenarios for exploratory science, design optimizations, and signal processing. However, a range of technical, organizational and sociological challenges must be overcome to make these interactive workflows mainstream in HPC centers: What simulation scenarios or problem domains can benefit most from interactivity? How can we simplify the toolchain? What center policies are needed to support highly interactive workflows? The goal of this workshop is to bring together domain scientists, tool developers, and HPC center administrators to identify the scientific impact and technical challenges of highly interactive access to HPC resources. 10. 5 PAWSEY ADDS NVIDIA GPUS TO ITS FREE HPC CLOUD SERVICE The Pawsey Supercomputing Centre is expanding its Nimbus cloud service with NVIDIA V100 GPU-powered servers in order to provide additional capabilities for researchers. The Pawsey press release offers up a colorful description of the added GPU capability: “These bad boys are built to accelerate Artificial Intelligence, HPC, and graphics. Powered by NVIDIA Volta architecture, they offer the performance of up to 100 CPUs in a single GPU.” The release goes on to say that the addition of the V100 to their Nimbus cloud puts Pawsey in “the same leagues as Google, Amazon, IBM and Microsoft who have recently announced their cloud expansion using the same NVIDIA GPUs.
