What is CKR5? • CKR5 or Chemokine receptor 5 is a protein found in the immune cells. • There are three types of CKR5 considered in this study: CKR5 wild-type, CKR5 /\ 32, and 32 /\ 32. • A deletion in base pair 32 will cause a frame shift. • For an individual to not become infected with HIV it has to posses two copies of CKR5 mutant allele. • What is the role of CKR5 /\ 32 allele in HIV infection?

  3. Recessive vs. Dominant • Recessive needs two copies. • Dominant needs only one copy. • In infection /\ 32 is recessive and in progression is dominant. • Homozygote means that have the same alleles and heterozygote have different alleles.

  4. Study • Determine the genotype distribution of 1955 individuals from six cohorts: DCG, MAC, SFCC, HGDS, MHCS, and ALIVE. • From each cohort both negative and positive HIV- were studied. • The cohort men were Caucasian and African Americans.

  6. Results • No significant difference in the allele frequencies of CKR5 between HIV-1 infected and HIV-1 antibody negative. • 17 Homozyogotes for CKR5 /\ 32 were HIV-1 antibody negative individuals with high exposure for HIV-1. • HIV-1 antibody-negative individuals have recessive restriction.
