  1. Co-operation towards WLAN – 3G & Public InterworkingA presentation based on LS fromETSI Project BRAN & MMAC HSWA Thomas Haslestad, Rapporteur of the HIPERLAN2 – 3G Interworking Group, ETSI Project BRAN Thomas.Haslestad@telenor.com Telenor R&D - Norway

  2. Content • Intention • Reason for and status of co-operation • Scope and purpose of Standardisation in 3GIWG • Areas for possible co-operation • Reference arch. • Authentication • System requirements • Accounting

  3. INTENTION of Liaison • Inform on the recent activities within 3GIWG • Highlight areas within which we can co-operate

  4. Reasons for co-operation • Unified Solution for 3GPP • Common WLAN interface for their ongoing work on WLAN-3G interworking • Interested parties in 3GPP: SA1,SA2,SA3, and T2,T3 • Unified Positioning towards IETF • Common set of requirements • Co-operation at lower layers • Increased commonality in implementation and impact on the market, for example roaming, interoperability • WLAN Public Access Interworking Global Solution

  5. A unified concept of interworking and an identical interface towards 3G and public access networks ??? 3GPP WISPER IETF GSM Ass. H2GF WECA WLAN Co-operation Status

  6. Scope and Purpose of Standardisation within 3GIWG Provisioning of a HIPERLAN/2 and HiSWANa interworking standard that is generically applicable to different 3G interworking networks and other types of public access networks. • Present: Release 1 • To provide a secure authentication scheme through the network to be interworked • To provide basic functionality for charging and accounting • Future stage: Release 2 • To provide support for functionality such as service integration, mobility and QoS differentiation support

  7. System AAA GAT W.2 Mutual scope of co-operation Common Standards for WLANs Radio L1/L2 Mobile Service Provider Scope of Standardisation Stack Level

  8. Reference Architecture Necessary to have a common architecture for ALL WLAN systems Invitation: To consider the following reference architecture as a possible model for IEEE802.11 interworking with 3G and Public networks (for R1)

  9. Authentication • To achieve a single common view towards 3GPP: • BRAN and HSWA believes that the mechanisms for remote authentication concerning the inter-working between WLAN and SPN needs to be common. • IEEE 802.11 view on this is very much appreciated • Current working Assumption within 3GIWG: • GAT (Generic Authentication Transport mechanism) • EAP based authentication scheme carried by GAT (EAPOH)

  10. Other • Accounting • Mechanisms are considered within the 3GIWG work • Would very much value your opinion on the applicability of this work with respect to IEEE 802.11 • Requirements • A set of system level requirements are identified in ETSI TR 101 957 ver.1.1.1 • These are currently being mapped onto W.2

  11. Thank you for your attention. Thomas Haslestad, Rapporteur of the HIPERLAN2 – 3G Interworking Group, ETSI Project BRAN Thomas.Haslestad@telenor.com Telenor R&D - Norway For more information: www.ETSI.org
