  2. Idea • Record key presentations in Computational Linguistics (video or PowerPoint + sound)- Conference talks- Tutorials- Lectures • Make video files freely available on the web

  3. Aims • Historical archive documenting developments in our field and honoring innovators • Means of communicating key results of meetings • Collection of tutorial materials- Learning from the leaders in the field- More personal than reading papers- Motivating and inexpensive

  4. Why now? No more technical excuses: • Good quality digital camcorders inexpensiveand easy to use • Video cut on standard PCs with free software • Distribution of large video files via the web now feasible (see e.g. www.onlinetvrecorder.com www.youtube.com ) • Related website: http://videolectures.net (BETA) Efficient means of scientific communication

  5. Realization • Can only be realized as a joint effort of the scientific community • Principles as with free software or Wikipedia- non profit- open to everybody- free access

  6. Who can help? • Professors by making their lectures available on video • Students by asking and assisting their professors to do so • Conference organizers by permitting or organizing recordings • Conference speakers by having their talks recorded • Conference participants by volunteering as camera teams • Companies and institutions by providing webspace and bandwidth • Video experts by offering technical advice
