  3. What is sexual harassment? • Harassment: any unwanted comment, gesture, or action that is sexual in nature • Assault: physical contact without consent • Sexual assault: sexual contact without consent. Covers range of behaviour, from touching to rape

  4. 3 Characteristics • Behaviour is unwanted or unwelcomed • Sexual in nature or relates to gender of individual • Focused on the impact, not the intent

  5. Statistics • Need to be careful with interpretation of statistics • Many sexual assaults go unreported • 1500 students surveyed in 18 schools: 57% were harassed within last 2 weeks • 55% of male students and 32% of female students did not care

  6. Canadian Statistics • Ontario schools: 70% of students reported being sexually harassed • Alberta schools: 80% claimed they had never been harassed • FHS: 40% experienced and 50% witnessed • Dances were mentioned as especially troublesome

  7. Harassed Students • Report feeling: more self conscious, embarrassed, afraid, less confident, and more doubtful about having a positive romantic relationship in the future. • School performance has also been found to decrease

  9. Social norms • Belief that it is inevitable and innocuous • Modify behaviour to conform • Fear of exclusion • Schools allow PDAs in hallways, does this create an atmosphere that fosters sexual harassment?

  11. Consent • Under 12->no consent. • 12-14->within 2 years • 14-16-> within 5 years • 16+-> consent, with exceptions • You cannot legally consent when you are intoxicated

  12. Coercion • Coercion is: persuasion through force, pressure or threats • If you say no and they continue, it is coercion • This includes, begging, whining, manipulating, lying, intimidating, flattery, promises • Meeting their demands, even only halfway, will not improve the situation

  13. Dating violence • 9% of high school students surveyed report being physically abused in a relationship • Does not start out as violent, follows a predictable pattern of coercion • If they do not respect you on the small issues, they will not respect you on the large issues • Where can you go for help?
