  3. But first… Q. What would you do with UNLIMITEDBANDWIDTH?

  4. What is Internet2? • “Born” in 1996 by UCAID • Led by over 200 US universities, K20, and corporations • Recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today’s Internet in its infancy • Mission = Develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow’s Internet

  6. MAGPI GigaPoP • Regional network aggregation point • Private research and education network • Sharing point for information, resources, projects • Current member list

  7. Why have Internet2? • The Regular or Commodity Internet was not designed for: • Millions of users • Congestion • Multimedia • Real time interaction

  8. Download of “The Matrix” DVD(Comparison of the Internet2 Land Speed Record)

  9. K20 Initiative • Internet2 now welcoming K-12s onto the High Speed Network • New K20 Consortium Established • MAGPI outreach to K-12s and IUs • Bridging K-12 to Higher Ed • Increased opportunities for joint funding

  10. Internet2 Applications Defined Applications that require enhanced networking functionality—such as high bandwidth, low latency (delay), or multicast—not available on commercial Internet connections.

  11. The 4 Killer Attributes • Interactive collaboration environments • Common access to remote resources • Using the network as a "backplane" to build network-wide computation and data services • Displaying information through virtual reality environments—moving from statics graphics and images to moving, three-dimensional animations.

  12. The BIG QUESTION What are educators in our area doing?

  13. Select Regional Applications • International Virtual Panel • Chester County World Tour • Math Modeling • Health Sciences Career Series • Other: AP Type Coursework, Remote Microscopy, Professional Development, Streaming Video

  14. International Virtual Panel • Coping With Stress and Education • 4 Panelists, experts in their fields • An audience of teachers, psychologists, and administrators • Interactive, H.323 Videoconferencing • Digitally Captured, Streaming, DVD formats for review and distribution

  15. No Longer a “Once in a Lifetime Opportunity”

  16. Chester County World Tour • Funded in part as TLCF grant • IP Videoconferencing Equipment in Classrooms • Train teachers • Connect foreign language teachers and students with native speakers • Spanish, French, Chinese

  17. Chester County World Tour Universidad de Chile

  18. Math Modeling • Building on successful language collaborations with Chile • Math Modeling addresses math performance issues in both countries • Global problem based learning

  19. Health Sciences Career Series • Geared to promote Health Science Careers • Nursing • Telepathology • Remote audiences of students, guidance counselors and school nurses • Four-way multipoint continuous presence video conferencing

  20. Other Regional Applications • AP Type Coursework – Villanova, CCIU • Streaming Video and Video on Demand – CCIU • Remote Microscopy – Lehigh University • Professional Development – Penn, Villanova, Temple

  21. Select National Projects • Virtual Harlem • Hands On Universe • Pacific Lighthouse • Distributed RAP Sessions • Cleveland Institute of Music - Distance Learning Program

  22. Virtual Harlem Project

  23. Hands On Universe • NSF Sponsored • Uses telescopes in Chile • Students in Mass. discovered a Kuiper Belt asteroid

  24. Pacific Lighthouse

  25. Distributed RAP Sessions

  26. Cleveland Institute of Music Distance Learning Program Math and Music Let’s go to the Show! Music Theory Jazz Band Coaching Master Classes Welcome to Opera Science of Sound Careers in Music http://www.cim.edu/dlPrograms.php#inter

  27. Possibilities for CAPE Members • Curtis Institute Interactive Master Class • NASA is an Internet2 Member • AP Course Delivery • Professional Development for Foreign Language Teachers • Virtual Field Trips – e.g., Smithsonian

  28. Funding Opportunities • PDE Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) – used to be TLCF, is now combined • Improving Technology at Colleges and Universities (ITCU) $4.1 million in grants for 23 Pennsylvania colleges and universities and Community Education Councils • NSF Math and Science Partnership (MSP) awarded $1.03M to educational consortium to train 200 math and science teachers in computer technologies • NSF Information Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) • NSF Information Technology Research (ITR) $500k - $15M for projects from Small, Medium, Large
