The Vedic Age • Named after the Vedas, religious texts including the Rig Veda • The Rig Veda- detailed procedures for ritual and sacrifice • Many groups migrate into the area, including the Aryans
The Vedic Age Aryans Dasas • Light skinned • Speakers of Indo- European • Native to India • Darker skin
The Vedic Age • Varnas ( caste system)- individuals born into a certain class • Later Hinduism and karma will impact these
Hinduism- Basic Beliefs Brahman Beliefs One force that underlies everything. • The goal of life is to achieve moksha, or union with brahman. • Every person has an atman, or essential self, and experiences reincarnation • Karmaholds that our actions affect our fate in the next life.
Hinduism-Beliefs • Hindus believe in dharma, the religious and moral duties of the person. • They practice ahimsa, nonviolence.
Caste System (Varnas) • A complex system of castes emerged. • Castes maintained social order • People believed karma determined their caste.
Untouchables • Excluded from the caste system • They were to be avoided because of the demeaning work they did
