  3. 30 PLACEMENTS 17 PARTNER ORGANISATIONS 14 COUNTRIES 3 month placements: 19 placements available 6-12 month placements: 11 opportunities overseas 2010 Placements

Wide range of projects – required skills & experience vary Eligibility: less than 4 years’ technical experience Check the required and desired skills & experience lists Summer placements usually start in the summer You can apply for up to three placements Apply online before midnight on 28 February 2010 Interviews 10-11, 17-18 April and training 21-25 June Requirements

Tell me more… • Support • Mandatory EWB-UK training course 21–25 June • Support from EWB-UK placement manager throughout • Preparation • You will be responsible for agreeing project goals and practicalities (flights, visas, immunisations) • Most placements require thorough research and preparation in advance – we’re here to help! • Return • A debrief and help with an evaluation • Invited to share your experience (presentations, press)

  6. Costs • EWB-UK believes in giving young people opportunities to get involved in international development work. • We will cover as much of the cost of your placement as we can – but you will need to contribute also. • Volunteers going on 3 month or 6 month placements are asked to contribute up to £600. • Volunteers going on 12 month placements are asked to contribute up to £900.

  7. Important Note All placements are subject to alteration or cancellation at the discretion of EWB-UK All EWB-UK placements are conditional on the following: 1. Successful identification of suitable candidate 2. Favourable country security assessment 3. EWB-UK securing the necessary funds for its share of the cost of the placement

  8. How to apply… • Stage 1: Online Application • Applications open until midnight on 28 February • Visit www.ewb-uk.org for full info & application • Stage 2: Interview • Interviews on 10–11 or 17–18 April • You must attend an interview • You may be required to travel to the interview

What we look for… • Candidates will be selected for: • their technical suitability for the placement • their non-technical suitability for the placement, • their interest in global issues • their potential future contribution to development • All based on evidence given on the application form and at the interview

SELCO SELCO Bangalore, India Develop food dehydrator and paddy de-husker tool 2 volunteers for 3 months A 3-month placement working with social enterprise and Ashden Award winner SELCO in their Innovations department to research, develop and trial a prototype food dehydrator and a paddy de-husking tool.

  14. ENERGY FORUM - 1 The Energy Forum of Sri Lanka Improve efficiency of electrical power generators 1 volunteer for 3 months A 3 month placement in Colombo, Sri Lanka to help improve efficiency of generators used to power cooking appliances in off-grid villages

ENERGY FORUM - 2 The Energy Forum of Sri Lanka Introduction of bio-mass digesters in urban communities 1 volunteer for 3 months A 3 month placement in Colombo, Sri Lanka to help supply urban communities with less polluting cooking fuel by the introduction of digesters to convert biomass to biofuel

  18. RUCHI Rural Centre for Human Interests Himachal Pradesh, India Sewage and sanitation plan for town of Baddi Sandholi 2 volunteers for 3 months A 3-month placement to develop a plan for the town of Baddi Sandholi to inform its water and sanitation strategy.

  19. SHELTER ASSOCIATES

  20. SHELTER ASSOCIATES - 1 Shelter Associates Pune, India GIS Mapping 1 volunteer for 3 months Consolidation of GIS mapping data for slum areas in the cities of Maharashtra. The data is used to help provide government slum development plans (housing, sanitation etc) with baseline information.

  22. SHELTER ASSOCIATES - 2 Shelter Associates Pune, India Data Analysis 1 volunteer for 3 months Consolidation and analysis of survey and mapping data for slum areas in the cities of Maharashtra. This placement will look at the dissemination of this information through the Shelter Associates website

MSABI MSABI Ifakara, Tanzania Survey and suggest improvement to Rope and Washer pump installations2 volunteers for 3 months A 3-month placement carrying out a survey of existing rope pump installations, including the different models and design of rope pump used by the community. Once the survey is complete the volunteers will identify areas of improvement where applicable

APTIVATE Aptivate Cambridge Software development; web technologies development, research and information dissemination 1 volunteer for 3 months Based in Cambridge, Aptivate develops ICT services that facilitate communication for unconnected communities. The volunteer will be office based, developing webware and software.

REDES REDES El Salvador Investigation into improved cooking stove projects in rural communities in El Salvador 2 placements for 3 months A 3-month placement working with a small NGO, to carry out surveys, assessments and then make recommendations on social projects in rural communities in El Salvador, specifically improved cooking stoves.

RASD Rural Agency for Sustainable Development Uganda Assessment of coffee growers’ productivity and potential to improve agricultural output and value of product 2 volunteers for 3 months A 3 month placement working with a small indigenous NGO that promotes rural developmentin Mukono district, Uganda, helping to create a demonstration plot for sustainable coffee production and carrying out a feasibility study into its export potential

  32. KOBE Kobe Projects Ltd Kenya Mass production of stabilised soil blocks 2 volunteers for 3 months A 3 month placement working with a non-profit technology transfer organisation to develop and test a system for the mass production of stabilised soil blocks

ARTI Appropriate Rural Technology Institute Phaltan, India Rural energy production from biogas and/or steam 2 volunteers for 3 months A 3 month placement with a mid-size NGO that promotes rural development in Maharashtra, central India. This is a research and development based placement investigating the effectiveness of biogas and/or steam electricity generating systems.

SIBAT Sibol ng Agham at Teknolohiva The Philippines Community-based renewable energy systems 1 volunteer for 12 months A 12 month placement with SIBAT, a Filipino non-governmental organisation developing and installing Community-Based Renewable Energy Systems, including micro-hydro systems, solar PV water pumps and wind turbines.

GVEP Global Village Energy Partnership Kenya Developing Energy Enterprises Project East Africa 1 volunteer for 6 months A 6-month placement carrying out research, training and case studies in support of GVEP International’s project to increase the availability and quality of energy products and services in Kenya through the development of micro and small energy enterprises.

  40. RUCHI

RUCHI Rural Centre for Human Interests India Bhogpur Model Rainwater Village 2 volunteers for 6 months A 3 month placement to improve access to water and provide basic hygiene facilities through design and construction of rainwater tanks. To assist RUCHI’s dedicated health workers in educating villagers on hygiene and health.

PiD Partners in Development Maputaland, South Africa Sustaining Rope and Washer Pumps 1 volunteer for 6 months A 6 month placement improving the sustainability and reliability of family-centred water supply in the remote parts of Maputaland, South Africa. This involves the continuation of work by previous EWB-UK volunteers to monitor, evaluate, and where necessary improve on the design of rope and washer pumps used in conjunction with shallow wells.

  45. SHELTER CENTRE Shelter Centre Switzerland Resources research and dissemination 2 volunteers for 6 months A 6 month placement working with Shelter Centre assisting on one of a number of projects involving transitional shelter and settlement standards and guidelines.

LIRE Laos Institute for Renewable Energy Lao PDR Research into Rural Energy and Water 1 volunteer for 6 months 6 month placement which encompasses rural bio-fuel generation, gasification of crop residues, software development for hybrid electricity grids, and development of rural water purification systems. The project will also involve collaboration with a local renewable energy provider, Sunlabob.

CRT Centre for Rural Technology Nepal Feasibility study for a sound Carbon Trading & Biomass Programme 1 volunteer for 6 months 6 month placement to undertake a feasibility study for a sound carbon trading / biomass programme with reference to improved cook stove and gasifier technology in Nepal.
