  2. What you will learn (core): • Standard 6Students will understand properties and behavior of heat, light, and sound. • Heat, light, and sound are all forms of energy that travel in waves.

  3. Vocabulary • These words will appear in italics throughout the heat, light, and sound units. • You should copy the word and its definition in your notes when we come to it. List of words: • wave • energy • medium • vibration • pitch • amplitude • wavelength • frequency

  4. What are Waves? Vocab: • wave • energy • medium • vibration • Open up to your glossary and copy the definitions for these words.

  5. What are Waves? (continued) • Waves require something to travel through. This is called a medium. Gases, liquids, and solids are all mediums. • After a wave passes, the medium returns to where it started. (see figure 1 on p. 15)

  6. What are Waves? (continued) • A moving object has energy, which can be transferred to a medium, creating a wave. • Waves are created when a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate. • The up-and-down or back-and-forth motion is a wave.

  7. What are Waves? (continued) • Waves are classified according to how they move. • Parts where the coils are close together are called compressions. • Parts where the coils are spread out are called rarefactions. • Turn to Figure 3 on page 16 and draw this figure in your notes.

Amplitude • Turn to page 19 in your book and look at figure 6. • Some waves are very high while others are barely noticeable. • The greater the energy transferred to them medium, the bigger the amplitude. • What would happen if you and another person each had the end of jump rope and you each moved your end up and down as hard as you could?

  13. Frequency • The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time. • It is also the number of vibrations per second. • More movement=higher frequency • Less movement=lower frequency • Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz)

  14. Speed • The speed of a wave is how far the wave travels in one unit of time. • Speed=wavelength x frequency • Frequency=speed/wavelength • Wavelength=speed/frequency • Waves in different mediums travel at different speeds.
