  3. Non-Nationalist Loyalty • Loyalties that are not embedded in the idea of nation. • Family loyalties

  4. Inflation • Rising prices and a drop in the purchasing power of money.

  5. Alienation • Being on the outside or being left out. • Often happens when people have been forced to sacrifice an important part of their identity. • China- Falun Gong- spiritual movement(collective consciousness)/under communism, religion outlawed. • Jailed/tortured

  6. Contending Loyalties? • Country/Nation-state • Religion • Culture

  7. Segregation • Forced separation of racial groups

  8. The dividing line between nationalist and non-nationalist loyalties is not always clear. Loyalties not embedded in the idea of nation.

  11. Just like understandings of nationalism can change, their opinion of what is in the national interest may change or differ. Does nationalist loyalty shape your judgment? Explain.
