  24. Summary The Earthquake Monitoring Center (EMC) at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) presents the fourteenth annual seismological bulletin of the earthquakes recorded during 2015. This release of earthquake data encompasses the seismic record from January 1st, 2015 to December 31st, 2015. A total of 1009 earthquakes were recorded of which 516 are regional/local type and 493 are teleseismic events. The majority of the regional events recorded are located along southern Iran in the Zagros fold thrust belt, Makran subduction zone in the Sea of Oman, along the Owen fracture zone in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Few events are located inside the territory of Oman. There were three felt events by Oman residents. The first event occurred on 19th of May at 08:01 pm (local time). It occurred in Oman Sea with a magnitude of 5.3 in local magnitude scale. It was felt by the residents in Yeti area. The second event occurred on 11th of September 2015 at 03:17 am (local time) with magnitude (Ml) of 2.5 and is located 6 km away from Al Amerat area where it has been felt. The last event occurred on 24th of December at 4:46 am (local time) with magnitude (Ml) of 2.0 and is located about 17 km away from Diba city Earthquake Monitoring Center The EMC at the SQU operates Oman Seismological Network (OSN) which consists of twenty seismographic stations. It started recording with ten short period stations since July 2001. The other ten are broadband seismograph stations; three of them established in June 2004 while the remaining seven started recording in March 2011. In 2013, the short period stations were upgraded to broadband stations. The geographic distribution of the seismic stations is shown in Figure 1. Table 1 shows the name, code, and coordinates of OSN stations. These stations transmit the continuous recording of ground motion via a satellite (VSAT) to the EMC at SQU. The EMC started utilizing data from some stations of the Global Seismological Network (GSN) and CTBTO stations since 2007 and 2011 respectively to improve the location of teleseismic earthquakes. Table 2 lists information of these global stations. EMC also started utilizing data from Dubai Seismic Network since 2006 as well as Abu Dhabi stations since 2011 to improve the accuracy in locating local events (Table 2). The EMC monitors and analyzes earthquake activities inside and outside Oman. Earthquake information is sent from the twenty stations in the various locations in Oman to the 1

  25. EMC where the Antelope Software performs an automatic initial stage of earthquake parameters determination such as location, origin time and magnitude. The EMC staff then reviews the automatic location done by the Antelope, confirms or adjusts the location and stores the event in the Oman earthquakes database and provides the appropriate maps. The total number of earthquakes recorded by OSN during the year 2015 is 1009 events. Table 4 presents the summary of earthquakes parameters recorded by EMC. The majority of the 516 local and the regional events are located in the southern and western Iran, Oman Sea, the Gulf of Aden and in the Arabian Sea as shown in Figure 2. In the Zagros region, 237 events were recorded with magnitude ranges from 2.2 to 5.7 in earthquake magnitude scale (Ml). In Makran region, and in the transition zone between Makran and Zagros, 129 events occurred with magnitude ranging from 1.3 to 5.5 in earthquake magnitude scale (Ml), of which three events have magnitude greater than 5. Moreover, 35 events are located in the Owen Fracture zone with magnitude ranging from 1.7 to 5.8 in local magnitude scale. one event has a magnitude greater than 5. five events are located on Masirah fault with magnitude ranges from 2.3 to 4.5 in local magnitude scale. On the other hand, 69 events took place in the Gulf of Aden with magnitude ranging from 1.1 to 5.5. Finally, 41 events occurred in the Oman Mountains and vicinity with magnitude ranging from 1.2 to 2.9. Eight events of these are of magnitude greater than 2. 4

  28. Figure 2 illustrates the distribution of earthquakes in each regional zone. Figure 3 presents the events distribution based on magnitude while Figure 4 shows the locations of felt events since 2001 till 2015. The number of events in each zone has been illustrated in Figure 5. The remaining (493) recorded events are of teleseismic type (Figure 6).   32. Seismic Sources Oman occupies the southeastern part of the Arabian plate, which experiences all tectonic margin types in close proximity (Figure 7). Divergent boundaries are evident to the west and south in the spreading centers of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Convergent margin lies along the Zagros-Bitlis suture zone, where continental collision has given rise to the Turkish– Iranian Plateau. The remainder of the convergent margin of the Arabian plate is defined by the Makran subduction zone, where the Arabian plate subducts beneath the Eurasian plate (Farhoudi and Karig 1977, Bayer et al., 2006). A transform boundary with the Indian plate exists to the southeast, at Owen fracture zone, which is the oldest and least active tectonic margin of the Arabian plate (Johnson 1998, Vita-Finzi 2001, Fournier et al., 2007). The strike- slip Dead Sea fault zone bounds the plate in the northwest. Most of the seismic activity from 1904 to 2010 is confined to the boundaries of the Arabian plate (Figure 8)(Al Shijbi,2013). The interior of the plate may be regarded, therefore, as a stable cratonic region (Johnson et al., 1994, Fenton et al., 2006, Aldama et al., 2009). Secondary earthquake cluster is represented by the local seismicity at the north of Oman Mountains. A few scattered background events occurred within the Arabian plate and the Sea of Oman. Figure 9 shows the focal mechanisms of the earthquakes associated with the tectonic units of the region (Reilinger et al., 2006). It is evident that large earthquakes have occurred at the previously defined active tectonic trends and their focal mechanisms are consistent with the regional kinematics. The first seismotectonic model adopted for Oman is driven by historical seismicity as well as tectonic activity discussed above (El-Hussain et al., 2012). The geometry of the source zones model is shown in Figure 10. The developed seismotectonic model constitutes 26 seismogenic zones (Table 3) and was constructed taking into consideration all the seismic sources that might affect Oman. Although it is remote from Oman, Yemen seismic source is included because Dhamar earthquake of 1982 was felt in some places in southern Oman. In addition, the stable craton that constitutes most of the Arabian Peninsula and the area between the defined zones in Iran were treated as background source zones. 9

  36. Analyses and Discussion The accuracy of earthquake location depends on the number and azimuth coverage location of the seismic stations. Therefore, if the earthquake falls within the network, a more reliable solution is produced. The uncertainty increases as earthquake occurs outside and far from the network. This leads to incertitude in location of the regional and teleseismic events and therefore, more wariness needs to be considered when interpreting these data. In spite of this limitations, the location of the local and regional earthquakes follows the major known tectonic features discussed above. It can be seen that the 2015 seismic activity location capture the major tectonic features of the region such as Zagros fold-thrust belt, Makran subduction, Owen fracture zone, the Gulf of Aden and the Oman Mountains (Figures 2 and 3). The Zagros seismicity source represents a collision zone and large earthquakes can happen giving a source for distant low frequency waves which may affect tall buildings. The seismicity in Makran Zone follows the Makran belt trend and concentrates on the Minab-Zandan and Diba line which are the transition between Zagros and Makran regions. The Makran Subduction zone presents a source for moderate to large earthquakes. However, it was the site of earthquake with magnitude 8.2 in 1945 which is the largest earthquake in the area in the 20th century. The seismicity in the Arabian Sea follows the Owen Fracture Zone. The Owen Fracture Source acts as a strike slip fault at which low to moderate earthquakes are expected. The seismicity on the Gulf of Aden follows the rift trend and on the Alula Fartaq transform that separates the east Gulf of Aden from the west Gulf of Aden. The Gulf of Aden is the place where normal and strike slip faults are occurring providing a potential source for moderate size earthquakes. The seismicity in Oman Mountains is concentrated at the northern part near Musandam and follows the mountains trend southward (Figure 2). The Oman Mountains region includes the active region in Musandam area affected by Dibba fault, Oman Mountains in the northern part of Oman where the obduction of the Semail Ophiolite plays a major role in the tectonic of this area, and the Maradi fault which is a major NW-SE Late Neogene fault. These three areas of Oman Mountains are likely the source for high frequency waves which may affect short buildings. During 2015, some small earthquakes recorded in southern Oman (Figure 2) probably related to Gulf of Aden source. Their magnitudes range from 1.2 to 2.7 on local magnitude scale. Also, about five small earthquakes have been recorded along Masirah fault with a magnitude range from 2.4 to 4.5. Seven events with magnitude range from 1.8 to 3.1 have been recorded along this fault during the year 2014, seven events with magnitude range from 13

  37. 1.7 to 3.0 have been recorded along this fault in 2013 and another three with magnitude range of 2.1 – 3.4 have been recorded along this fault in 2012. In addition, an event with magnitude of 3.51 has been recorded in 2008 and felt by Masirah residents. This necessitate the need to examine this fault in more detail due to its close proximity to ambitious projects in Duqm region. Conclusions A total of 1009 earthquakes have been recorded during 2015. Most of the regional events are located in southern Iran, the Zagros fold and thrust belt, Oman Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Arabian Sea along well known plate boundaries and faults. Earthquake recordings in the year 2015 and the previous years show an increase in epicentral concentration in Musandam and this is due to increase of EMC ability to record smaller events due to increased number of the seismic stations in the north. In 2015 microseismicity has been recorded in southern Oman with magnitude range from 1.2 to 2.7 on local magnitude scale. This activity might be related to quarries blasting in the area. In addition, about five events have been recorded along Masirah fault with magnitudes range from 2.4 to 4.5 on local magnitude scale. Also, seven events have been recorded along this fault in 2014, five events have been recorded in 2013 and three events in 2012. Furthermore, an event with magnitude of 3.5 has been recorded in 2008 and felt by Masirah residents. Accordingly, it can be concluded that this fault is potentially active one. This fault will be considered and examined in more details in the future seismic hazard studies. Well established collaboration with UAE networks resulted in enhanced detectability of events in Northern Oman and UAE region. Thus, a future cooperation and data exchange with the regional seismological centers will be sought to improve location of events at the border and inside Oman 14
