  1. HARUN YAHYA Presented by Nurul Liyana bt Janah@Zainal Fatin Nadia Baharuddin Nurul Diana Mad Rabi Edited by Dr. Md. Mahmudul Hasan International Islamic University Malaysia 2011

  2. Background • His real name is Adnan Oktar. He writes under the pen name of Harun Yahya which combines the names of two prophets of Islam, Harun and Yahya. • He was born in Ankara, Turkey on 2 February 1956. • He studied arts at Istanbul’s Mimar Sinan University and philosophy at Istanbul University. • He has been publishing since the 1980s on a range of subjects that cover politics, faith and science.

  3. His works are translated into many languages, such as: English, French, German, Italian, Arabic, Indonesian, and many more. • His main goal is to covey the message of the Qur’an, and make people think about basic faith-related issues such as life hereafter and the existence of God. • He argues against Marxism, communism, and materialistic philosophy.

  4. The Mimar Sinan Years • When AdnanOktar entered MimarSinan University, it was dominated by various Marxist-communist organizations. • This environment was not helpful for religion and for moral values. • AdnanOktar began telling those around him about the existence and oneness of God and he was the only person who prayed openly in MollaMasjid. He would sleep only a few hours and spend the rest of his time reading, taking notes, and writing.

  5. He realised that since Darwinism advanced itself in the name of science, the most effective means of exposing its true face was through science itself. • So, he brought out a pamphlet entitled The Theory of Evolution. It argues that the theory of evolution is a deception and has no scientific validity. The people who read the pamphlet are persuaded to believe that God created the universe and all living things in it.

  6. ConspiracyAgainst Harun Yahya • His intellectual activities opposing materialism and atheism grabbed the attention of a certain group of people who set up a major conspiracy against him. • In summer 1986, Adnan Oktar was arrested for having said in an interviewed carried by a newspaper: “I am a member of the Turkish nation, and of the community of Ibrahim.” • He was arrested, imprisoned, and then transferred to the Bakirkoy Mental Hospital on the plea of him being mentally unhealthy.

  7. He was chained to his bed by his ankle for six weeks and forcibly given drugs. • He was threatened with spending the rest of his life in the hospital unless he abandoned his activities. However, he refused to bow to the threats. • After 19-month dention, he was declared innocent and then released. • In middle 1991, the cocaine conspiracy occurs. The police have discovered a pocket of cocaine in the very first book they opened in a library of a 2000 books.

  8. He was detained immediately in Izmir, transferred to the Istanbul Security Directorate and after 62 hours sent to the Forensic Medicine Institution for drugs testing. • It was announced that his blood showed a high level of cocaine. • However, all the evidence submitted later showed that this was nothing more than slander.

  9. Books The Disasters Darwinism Brought to Humanity (2001) Fascism: The Bloody Ideology of Darwinism(2002) Islam Denounces Terrorism (2003) • Children’s books Wonders of Allah’s Creation (2002) The World of Animals (2002) Let’s Learn Our Religion (2002) • Works on Qur’anic topics The Basic Concepts in the Qur’an (2002) The Moral Values of the Qur’an (2000) TheReal Home of Believers: Paradise

  10. Fascism and Hatred of Women • Women have been oppressed for many centuries, as great civilizations did not recognize their roles in society. • Women’s roles are being neglected even though men are aware of women’s ability in many fields. Women excel in education, legislation, literature and many more, but they are denied opportunities.

  11. Harun Yahya criticizes Italy’s Mussolini for much of women’s suffering. • Mussolini said on 12 November 1922: There are those who say that I intend to limit the right to vote. No! Every citizen will keep his right to vote for the Rome Parliament…. Let me also admit to you that I am not thinking of extending the vote to women. There would be no point. My blood opposes all kinds of feminism when it comes to women participating in state affairs. Naturally a woman shouldn't be a slave, but if I conceded her the vote, I'd be laughed at. In our state, she must not count.

  12. During the serious economic crisis in 1930, Mussolini ordered that women should leave their places of work. Because he saw women as "thieves who reach out to steal men's bread, and responsible for men's unproductiveness." • Based on the above statements, HarunYahya ascertains that women are important in society and they must be treated equally. • It is important for women to preserve their dignity, honour and eminence as mothers. • HarunYahya also emphasizes the softness of woman’s character.

  13. Muslim women in Married life • Based on the ayah "They are clothing for you, and you for them“ (Al-Baqarah: 187), we can say that both husband and wife hold equal responsibilities in marriage. • HarunYahya introduce s the concept of ‘togetherness’ in marriage. In order to strengthen love between husband and wife, they must do things together. • Respect is another important element in marriage. Both husband and wife must respect each other . The husband must respect the needs and opinions of wife.

  14. In order to avoid misunderstanding and divorce, both husband and wife must tolerate each other. • HarunYahya then touches on separation and quotes the Qur’anic verse “Divorced women should receive maintenance given with correctness and courtesy: a duty for all who are righteous” (Surat al-Baqara: 241) to emphasize women’s rights in marriage. • Another Qur’anic verse related to women and divorce is“… Give them a gift – he who is wealthy according to his means and he who is less well off according to his means – a gift to be given with correctness and courtesy: a duty for all good-doers. If you divorce them before you have touched them but have already allotted them a dowry, they should have half the amount which you allotted, unless they forgot it or the one in charge of the marriage contract forgoes it. To forgo it is closer to taqwa. Do not forget to show generosity to one another. God sees what you do. (2: 236-237). These verses establish women’s rights in Islam.

  15. God states in the Qur’an: When you divorce women and they are near the end of their waiting period, then either retain them with correctness and courtesy or release them with correctness and courtesy. (2: 231) O you who believe! When you marry believing women and then divorce them before you have touched them, there is no waiting period for you to calculate for them, so give them a gift and let them go with kindness.(33: 49)

  16. In this regard, HarunYahya concludes: “In a society where people live by the Qur'an, women are not subjected to maltreatment and dishonoured as in other societies.”-HarunYahya (AdnanOktar)

  17. Harun Yahya divides the book into 4 parts: Part 1: The Scientific Miracles of the Qur’an Part 2: The Information given about the future in the Qur’an Part 3: The Historical Miracles of the Qur’an Part 4: The Evolution Misconception

  18. Scientific Miracles of the Quran • Many scientific truths that have only been uncovered in the twentieth century were earlier stated in the Qur’an, 1400 years ago.

  19. 1. Three stages of the baby in the womb “He creates you stage by stage in your mothers' wombs in a threefold darkness. That is God, your Lord. Sovereignty is His. There is no god but Him. So what has made you deviate?” (39:6) • Indeed, modern biology has revealed that the baby's embryological development takes place in three distinct regions in the mother’s womb.

  20. This fact is stated in a fundamental reference text in the field of embryology, Basic Human Embryology (1966): “The life in the uterus has three stages: pre-embryonic: first two and a half weeks, embryonic: until the end of the eight week, and fetal: from the eight week to labor.”

  21. 2.The identity in the fingerprints The Qur’an states: “Does man think that We cannot assemble his bones? Yes, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.” (75: 3-4) • - This emphasis on fingerprints has a very special meaning, as everyone's fingerprint is unique. Every person who is alive or who has ever lived in this world has a set of unique fingerprints.

  22. That is why fingerprints are accepted as a very important proof of identity, exclusive to their owner, and are used for this purpose around the world. • But, this feature of fingerprints was only discovered in the late nineteenth century. Before then, people regarded fingerprints as ordinary curves without any specific importance.

  23. The Information Given about the Future in the Quran. 1. The Victory of Byzantium “Elif, Lam, Mim. The Romans have been defeated in the lowest land, but after they will themselves be victorious in a few years time. The affair is God's from beginning to end.” (30:1-4) • These verses were revealed almost seven years after the severe defeat of Christian Byzantium at the hands of the idolater Persians. Byzantium had suffered such heavy losses that it seemed impossible for it to survive, and everyone was expecting the Byzantine empire to be destroyed.

  24. But, right at that moment, the first few verses of Sura Rum were revealed which predict the victory of Byzantium. Then, it really happened. Seven years after the revelation, a decisive battle between Byzantium and the Persian Empire was fought at Nineveth. The Byzantine army unexpectedly defeated the Persian. As a result, the Persian had to make an agreement with Byzantium which obliged them to return the territories they had taken from it.

  25. The Historical Miracles in the Quran 1.Titles of Egyptian Rulers in Qur’an • Mosa (A) was not the only prophet who lived in the lands of Egypt. The Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) had aslo lived in Egypt long before his time. However, there is a certain parallel in their stories.

  26. While addressing the Egyptian ruler at the time of Yusuf, the work “Malik" (the King) is used in the Qur'an: “Al-Malik (the King) said, ‘Bring him (Yusuf) to me straightaway! so I may draw him very close to me.’ When he had spoken with him, he declared, ‘Today you are trusted, established in our sight.’” (12:54) • Conversely, the ruler at Mosa’s time is referred to as the ‘Pharaoh’: “We gave Mosa nine clear signs. Ask the tribe of Israel about when he came to them and Pharaoh said to him, ‘O Mosa, I think you are bewitched.’” (17:101)

  27. Historical records available today tell us the reason for the different nomenclature of these rulers. The word ‘Pharaoh’ was originally the name given to the royal palace in ancient Egypt. The rulers of the old dynasty did not use the title. The use of the word pharaoh as the title of the ruler did not start until the "New Kingdom" era of Egyptian history. This period started with the 18th dynasty (1539-1292 BC), and by the 20th dynasty (945-730 BC) the word "pharaoh" was adopted as a title of respect. • Thus the miraculous nature of the Qur'an is manifested here once again: Prophet Yusuf lived at the time of the Old Kingdom, and hence the word ‘Malik’ was used for the Egyptian ruler . On the contrary, since Mosa lived at the time of the New Kingdom, the ruler of Egypt is addressed as ‘Pharaoh’.

  28. The Evolution Misconception • In this book, Harun Yahya includes a chapter on the evolution misconception. Evolution is the main theory that materialism adopts as a so-called scientific basis for its own ends. This theory, which claims that life originated from inanimate matter by chance, has actually collapsed with the confirmation of the fact that the universe was created by God.

  29. Evolution theory is contrary both to reason and science. Harun Yahya concludes that anyone who does not look at the origin of living beings with a materialist prejudice will see this evident truth: All living beings are works of a Creator, Who is All-Powerful, All-Wise and All-Knowing. This Creator is God, Who created the whole universe from non-existence, designed it in the most perfect form, and fashioned all living beings.

  30. Conclusion • Harun Yahya’s works centre around one goal: to convey the message of the Qur’an to people and encouraging them to think about basic faith-related issues. • Thus, Harun Yahya contributes a lot to the Muslim world and he deserves our admiration for his intellectual courage and hard work.
