Graphene Computer Chips Nicole Hutchison 10/11/2013 ITMG 100 06
Intorduction • Discovered by Andre Geimin 2004 • One atom thick layer of copper
Technology • Main features of graphene: • Lightweight • Flexible • It is very conductive to electricity. • Nearly transparent. • It is two dimensional. • Strongest material
Progress • Use light instead of electricity to move data between chips • Would conduct less heat that current chips • Would use much less energy than electrical chips • Sweet Video
Pricing • Graphine oxide powder sells for 99 Euros/250mL • Mechanically exfoliated graphene sells for thousands of dollars per flake • Price expected to drop as the product becomes more prominent in everyday products • Pricing Chart
Drawbacks • Currently only converts 2% of light into energy • Still working on more efficient ways to utilize graphene in computer chips
