  3. KEY SIGNATURES • The collection of flats and sharps at the beginning of each staff is known as the Key Signature. • The key signature is the sign placed at the beginning of a piece of music after the clef to show the key in which the piece is written. It comprises of the sharps and flats. The key signatures so far considered are arranged for treble and bass clefs as follows:

  4. SHARP MAJOR KEYS

  5. FLATS MAJOR KEYS.

  6. In addition to the above, the following simple set of rules will help you work out the key from the key signature:For Major Sharp Keys, find the note one semitone higher than the last sharp, this will give you the key note (the name of the key). In other words, the position of the last sharp in the key signature indicates ‘t’ in solfa. The next line or space above this is doh : For example :

  7. The last sharp on the space i.e. C sharp stands for te. The next line D is doh.

  8. For Flat Major Keys, look at the last flat but one; this is the key note, or look for the last flat in the key signature, the key note will be four notes below this flat. • The last but one flat is in space B, hence B flat is the key note – doh • Note: the above rules do not work for C major as the key of C major has no sharps or flats. It also does not work for F major because there is only one flat in the key of F major.
