  5. Early Years Foundation Stage Provisional Headlines 2011

  6. EYFS- overall very positive NI 72 (Threshold) Threshold Target¹ improved by 5.9% to 59.2% against the 2011 target of 55% A continued improvement. An increase of 18.2% since 2007 This means that in 2011, 234 more children in Coventry have a achieved a good level of development as compared with 2010. 1 The percentage of children achieving 78 points and 6+ more on each of the 7 scales in PSED and CLL

EYFS – Areas of Learning In 2011 all areas of learning have improved with the greatest increase is in Communication Language and Literacy and Mathematical Development Communication Language & Literacy Building on the increase made in 2010, in 2011 there was a further increase of 6.1% resulting in 61.6% Although there has been a good increase in LSL, Reading and writing there still needs to be further work to ensure a greater proportion children reach a good level of development in these important areas.

  9. Key Stage 1 Overall, positive picture with improvements in majority of areas High confidence in the security of assessment judgements 37% of schools in 2011 had new teachers in Year 2

  10. 2010-2011 Speaking and listening – improved by 1% to 84% at level 2+ and improved by 2% to 20% at level 3+ Reading – remained stable at 82% at level 2+, improved by 2% to 22% at level 3+ and improved by 1% to 70% at level 2B+ Writing – improved by 1% to 78% at level 2+, improved by 1% to 11% at level 3+ and improved by 3% to 59% at level 2B+ Not yet clear what the gap with national figures will be – national data expected end of September

KS2 Tests – Writing interim arrangements for 2012 • Pupils results for English writing will be a teacher assessment judgment of their work across Year 6 • All schools must administer a writing test to all eligible pupils. If schools opt to mark tests internally, then the test can be administered at any time throughout the spring or summer term (as in KS1). • Schools report a teacher assessment level in writing which is informed but not determined by the test. • New writing skills test from 2013- (new materials trialled)

  17. New OFSTED framework • 150 pilot inspections undertaken during May and June 2011 • Training scheduled to begin for inspectors from September 2011 • Framework to be implemented from January 2012

Overall effectiveness During the pilot the overall effectiveness grade took particular account of: • The achievement of all pupils • The quality of teaching • The effectiveness of leadership and management • Behaviour and safety It also took into account how well the school promoted the pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development

Specific focus on reading • How well pupils understand what they are reading • The extent to which pupils demonstrate higher order reading skills and knowledge, such as inference and appreciation of style • The overall quality of pupils' reading, including their decoding strategies, understanding and fluency • Children are grouped and taught effectively for teaching reading • There is an effective balance of whole-class, group, pair and individual work • Teachers and teaching assistants are trained in how to teach reading
