  3. J – Shaped Growth • Intrinsic of growth rate • Every species has “built in” rate of increase • Each species has evolved reproductive strategies and rates • Assures genetic continuance

  4. Limiting Factors • Two types • Density Independent • Density Dependent

  5. Density Independent • Factors which exert influence uniformly on populations of various sizes • Climate • Example: if a tornado destroys group of animals in area, does not matter how many present

  6. Density Dependent • Factors which exert influence on the population where the numbers of individuals present matters • Diseases and parasites are the best examples • In densely populated areas, spread of disease is much more likely
