  1. The King is Coming: Who Is He To You?Matthew 21: 1-11; Zechariah 9:9 2012: Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II

  2. Palm Sunday – we remember a royal celebration from 2000 years ago. • Called - The Triumphal Entry • A significant event in the life of Christ •  made a statement about the nature of His kingship. • Some rejoiced, others questioned, many rejected Him • Question for you today is: • Who is this King to you?

  3. Context: • Jesus travelling to Jerusalem from Galilee • He took nine months for this trip • The timing of this journey was not coincidental • His arrival in Jerusalem was just in time for the Passover feast. • There was great tension and expectancy in Jerusalem.

  4. Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem in time for Passover was carefully orchestrated. • His Triumphal Entry was the catalyst that started the events of God’s plan unfolding • Jesus was the Passover Lamb and His death needed to take place on Passover • John the Baptist: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”

  5. As Jesus rode into Jerusalem the crowds cried out “Hosanna – Hosanna” • Hosanna  means “O Save” • Matthew 21:10 [ESV] - And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” • Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey was a direct fulfill of a Messianic prophecy spoken about by the prophet Zechariah 500 years earlier • Jesus was declaring Himself as King.

  6. Zechariah 9:9 [ESV] - Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (c.f. Matthew 21:5) • Who Is This King to You? • The Rightful King • The Righteous King • The Saving King • The Servant King

  7. 1. The Rightful King • Zechariah 9:9 [ESV] - Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you… mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. • Jesus entered Jerusalem on a young donkey colt he was declaring to the people that He was their Messiah  the rightful King of God’s people. • Riding a donkey  identifying Himself with the royal line of David.

  8. 1 Kings 1:33-34 [ESV] - And the king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord and have Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon. And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet there anoint him king over Israel. Then blow the trumpet and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ • Luke 19: 38 [ESV] - “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” • Jesus is the Rightful King.

  9. What does that mean for you and me? • We are His subjects and must recognize His kingship • The Jews spread their coats for Jesus to ride on • What are you willing to lay down before Him as a sign of your devotion to your King? • He deserves your loyalty, your allegiance, your surrender.

  10. 2. The Righteous King • Zechariah 9:9 [ESV] - Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous… • “righteous” describes the very moral character of Jesus • It means to be “just” – “standing for what is right” • Psalm 145:17 – “The Lord is righteous in all his ways” • Jeremiah 23:6 – “And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our Righteousness’”

  11. As His subjects, we are called to emulate the very nature of our King. • Philippians 1:9-11 [ESV] - And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

  12. Matthew 5:6 [ESV] - “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. • Righteousness should be what distinguishes us as followers of Christ our King from those who do not know Christ. • Do you hunger and thirst for righteousness? • Jesus is our Righteous King and He calls us to live a life filled with grace, love, justice and purity.

  13. 3. The Saving King • Zechariah 9:9 [ESV] - Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he. • Many people in the crowd were looking for Salvation from Jesus. • “Hosanna! Hosanna!” “O Save” “O Save” • Looking for the wrong kind of salvation. • God provided the ultimate Salvation – salvation from the root cause of the brokenness in the world we live in.

  14. Are you looking for a Saviour who will deal with the symptoms of your problems… • Or do you want a Saviour who HAS dealt with the root cause of the problem? • Jesus – Our Saving King – brings salvation to all who put their faith and trust in Himthrough His righteous sacrifice on the cross. • Do you want Him to be your Saving King? •  Give Him your faith and your trust.

  15. 4. The Servant King • Zechariah 9:9 [ESV] - Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. • Humility was at the heart of Jesus’ life and ministry.

  16. Philippians 2:5-8 [ESV] - Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

  17. As His subjects, we also need to demonstrate that same attitude of humility • 1 Peter 5:5-6 [ESV] - Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, • Ephesians 4:2 [NIV] - Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

  18. Jesus is: Your Rightful King • He deserves your honor and allegiance • Your Righteous King • He wants you to hunger and thirst for doing what is right • Your Saving King • He wants you to put your faith and trust in Him – so you can have eternal life • Your Servant King • He wants you to be humble yourself and offer your life in passionate service to Him. •  Will you worship your King today?
