WHAT IS THE PSAT • PRELIMINARY SAT TEST • IT IS A PRACTICE SAT GIVEN BY THE COLLEGEBOARD • IT IS A STANDARDIZED TEST • IT GIVES STUDENTS VALUABLE INFORMATION ABOUT CRITICAL READING, MATH, WRITING • GIVEN ONCE A YEAR IN OCTOBER • STATE OF GEORGIA PAYS FOR ALL 10TH GRADERS TO TAKE. 9TH OR 11TH GRADERS CAN PAY TO TAKE THE TEST AS WELL • ALSO SERVES AS A QUALIFYING TEST FOR THE NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

Advanced Placement (AP) • AP Classes are available at White County High School • Students will take an AP Exam at the End of the Class • The AP exams are scored 1-5 • Students who earn a 3, 4, or 5 may get college credit • College credit awarded varies from college to college • Research indicates that students who take AP courses in high school perform better in college

Accel vs. MOWR ACCEL Move on When Ready • Eligible Students in grades 9-12 (Many colleges will only take 11-12th graders) • Must apply and be accepted by the college • Full-time or part-time • Courses on Accel list • On the college campus or at High School • Earn credit at both the high school and college • Hours attempted will not count against HOPE Hours • Eligible Students in grades 11-12 • Must apply and be accepted by the college • Full-time ONLY (min 12 hours) • If you drop one course you have to drop them all • Courses on the approved list • On the college campus • Earn credit at both the high school and college • Hours will not count against HOPE Hours

26. ACCEL VS. HOPE GRANT • Accel is for core courses (Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Foreign Language) • Hope Grant is for Technical Certificate or Diploma Program courses (Welding, Mechanics, Engineering, etc.)

Articulation • Any student in grades 9-12 at a high school that has an articulation agreement with a local college can participate. • No college admission required before graduation • Courses within articulation agreements are eligible • Take classes on high school campus • Credit awarded at the college level is contingent upon passing the college’s qualifying exam • No cost • HOPE limits are not affected

28. Residential Programs • Live full time on a college campus • Two Programs • University of West Georgia • Middle Georgia College

Joint Enrollment • Joint enrollment is NOT a dual enrollment program • Must apply and be accepted to the college • Part-time status is required at the college • Student can take ANY course that the college offers • Credit is ONLY earned at the college and not transferred back to the high school • Can be paid for by the HOPE grant/scholarship or by the student/parents • Courses taken and paid for by HOPE grant/scholarship do count towards HOPE hours

30. Requirements to Participate • In an eligible grade 9-12 depending on program • Been reported as enrolled in a public high school the preceding October and March • Applied and been accepted by a post-secondary institution • Meet requirements set by WCHS • Complete and submit the state Accel application • Be in good standing as a student • Maturity is an important factor to consider • Take only courses from the approved list • Meet with counselor to schedule courses and receive advisement
