Establishing new energy crop targets by region, facilitating industry-government partnerships, and coordinating policy decisions to achieve bioenergy goals. Urgent need for sustainable biomass removal guidelines.
E N D
Technical milestones (Joules Targets): • A second set of targets should be set and agreed on for energy crops (not just stover and corn cobs) and possibly by regions • Current targets have been achieved by energy crops, but will not be economically feasible at 1.2 DM tons/acre-year.
General • Guidelines and tools are needed to assure biomass removal is done sustainably, without damaging the soil. Private industry would like to be involved in setting these guidelines. • Government agencies may want to facilitate
General • Facilitate meeting between commodity organizations and Regional Feedstock Partnerships to discuss status. • Commodity organizations can request more money from Congress. • USDA, EPA, DOE need to coordinate land use and other policy decisions to make bioenergy goals feasible.
Timeline • Dave Muth’s tools are important – will it be field deployable in the near term? • High yielding crops are already creating enough biomass that can be sustainably harvested. The need for guidelines is immediate and a high priority.
Data Loading • Would data be made public after five years from the last update, or five years from project completion? • Suggestion: Add meta data to KDF data input (what the data/project is, goals, etc) • What is the compromise that allows DOE to show what is being accomplished by the Partnership without disclosing too much information/data from the projects?
Synthesis Reports • Define what a synthesis report is. • KDF and level of access to data published there. Is there a way to make sure that while summary data is available, that specific plot data and locations are not? (Forest Service)
