What to Consider When Choosing a 3D Scanner

Although 3D scanners are all designed for roughly the same purpose, they go about it in different ways. Every 3D laser scanner is different in some way, and these differences make them perfect for specific jobs. However, it can also make choosing the right one more difficult. Here is what you should consider when choosing a 3D scanner.

1. What to Consider When Choosing a 3D Scanner

 2. Purpose When choosing your 3D scanner, focus on its purpose first. Scanners are designed to be versatile, but they often excel in specific industries for different reasons. For example, a surveying company that works in remote areas may need to use a scanner that can be mounted on a drone. In this case, an industrial laser scanner may be the best choice. They tend to be small enough for middle or large sized drowes without compromising scan quality. On the other hand, a construction company may need a drone to cover a large area from a single spot. In this case, your company likely needs a long-range 3D scanner. Which one you choose mainly depends on how you will use it.

 3. Size Size also plays an important part in choosing the right 3D scanner. Complex jobs can benefit from using a high-grade industrial laser scanner. However, there are smaller ones that work for different purposes. A good example of this is the Leica BLK2GO, a 3D level scanner that is small enough to carry with one hand. In fact, it is designed for a surveyor to pick it up with one hand and walk around with it during the scanning process. A scanner this size is perfect for scanning the inside of a building, but may not be the best option for other purposes. Alternatively, the Scanstation P50 is a larger option that is designed to be stationary. It is a long range 3D scanner with a range up to 1km and is perfect for surveying large outdoor areas like construction sites. There are scanners that can perform in multiple roles equally as well. However, there are size requirements in some situations that can make a scanner the wrong choice. Understand your requirements for completing the job before choosing a scanner so that you can be sure that you can use that scanner in the way that you need to.

 4. Scanning Methodology 3D scanners use a variety of different scanning methodologies, and it is important to know which options you have available. There are many options to choose from, which also include options like thermal scanning and visual scanning. For commercial and industrial purposes, you will most likely use a structured light 3D scanner or a laser triangulation scanner. There is a difference in what these options are good for.

 5. Special Purpose Scanners There are scanners that are designed for unique purposes, which can be highly beneficial if it fits your needs. Otherwise, your scanner may not be very useful for what you need to do. For example, the Leica BLK ARC is a 3D scanner that is designed to work with robots. Its special design lets it scan an area and provide instant feedback to a robot trying to move through that area. Robotics developers use scanners like these as the heads of their robots so that they can see while they move.
