INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION • BREAKING NEWS!!: Aliens have crash landed on the field of Caludon Castle. • They were on a mission from their home planet, Neerg, when their spaceship’s engines failed and they crash landed. • Neerg is the most environmentally friendly planet in our galaxy, the Milky Way, and the aliens were on a mission to discover other like minded planets in our galaxy when they crash landed into planet earth. TASK INTRODUCTION • You must help the aliens design and build a new eco-friendly spaceship so that they can complete their mission and return home to Neerg. • Neerg is a planet where sustainability is at the heart of their beliefs and it is very important that the aliens’ new spaceship is made using the principles of sustainability so that you do not offend the aliens.   5. PROCESS INTRODUCTION • 1. Mind map, using prior knowledge, ways of being environmentally friendly (e.g. turning off lights when not in use). (5 mins) • 2. Start to design your spaceship. You can either use the available computer packages for this or pen and paper. You should be as creative as possible but you must stick with the environmentally friendly ethos. (30 mins) You should consider the following:- • What will it be made of? Could it be made of recycled material? • What will it run on? You should ensure that it is a renewable resource. • How will the aliens dispose of waste? • What will they eat and where will they get their food from for their long journey? (Hint: The aliens will not want to eat food that has been imported from another country due to the impact that that has on the planet. • What will power the lighting and equipment on board? 3.   6. Meaning of Sustainability: To live sustainably is to live so that you meet the needs of the present without affecting the needs of the future. The resources that you use must be those that are capable of being renewed so that they will not run out. Examples of renewable resources are wind, sun and water. Wood can also be a renewable resource if it is managed properly, i.e. new trees are planted at the same rate that you use them.
