  2. Inquiry: "The type of exploration that lies at the heart of scientific activity. According to the National Science Education Standards, inquiry is "a multifaceted activity that involves making observations; posing questions; … planning investigations; … using tools to gather, analyze, and interpret data; proposing answers, explanations, and predictions; and communicating the results" (National Research Council, 1996, p. 23)"(Moodle-Dr. S. Glossary). Balloon Activity

  3. Discuss & Agree The reason for the balloon’s reaction in DEMO #2 is: the liquid did something to the balloon, like the moisture made it more expandable Hypothesis: When a fully inflated balloon is brushed with liquid in the strongest area of the balloon (in the middle top part), letting the liquid sit for a few seconds, the balloon becomes more expandable and will not pop when a pin is pushed through. Balloon Activity

  4. Experiment: Design then conduct an experiment activity that will test your hypothesis. Our Experiment consisted of 5 trial runs to prove/ disprove our formulated hyposthesis Balloon Activity

  5. Experiment Materials Needed: 5 Balloons 1 Pin 1 Magic Blue Water 1 Wire Brush 1 Beaker Balloon Activity

  6. Experiment #1 Take the first balloon, using the wire brush; brush the liquid on the exterior of balloon in the center of the top. Let the liquid sit for roughly a minute. Then hold the balloon away from your face (safety) and carefully push the pin into the center of the top of the balloon.                                **Prediction: Balloon will not pop!** Results: Right✔ Balloon did NOT pop! Balloon Activity

  7. Experiment #2 Take the second balloon, using the wire brush; brush the liquid on the exterior of balloon in the center of the top. (No waiting period for liquid). Then hold the balloon away from your face (safety) and carefully push the pin into the center of the top of the balloon.                         **Prediction: Balloon will not pop!** Results: Right✔ Balloon did NOT pop! Balloon Activity

  8. Experiment #3 Take the third balloon, using the wire brush; brush the liquid on the exterior of balloon in any area of the balloon except the center of the top. (No waiting period for liquid) Then hold the balloon away from your face (safety) and carefully push the pin into the balloon.                               **Prediction: Balloon will pop!** Results: Right✔ Balloon did pop! Balloon Activity

  9. Experiment #4 Take the fourth balloon, using the wire brush; brush the liquid on the exterior of balloon in any area of the balloon except the center of the top. Wait roughly a minute after applying the liquid before using pin. Then hold the balloon away from your face (safety) and carefully push the pin into theballoon.                                   **Prediction: Balloon will pop!** Results: Right✔ Balloon did pop! Balloon Activity

  10. Experiment #5 Take the last balloon, hold the balloon away from your face (safety) and carefully push the pin into the center of the bottom of the balloon.                        **Prediction: Balloon will NOT pop!** Results: Right✔ Balloon did NOT pop! Balloon Activity

  11. Findings ** Our original hypothesis was disprovedL during these experiments. However, we did find that the water has nothing to do with it all; it is just an added element to the experiment. What DOES matter is where the pin is placed in the balloons. If you place a pin in the top or bottom center of a balloon, the balloon will not pop, regardless of whether or not a liquid is present.
