Prueba + The Present Progressive Objective & Big Picture:  Knowledge of the Present Progressive allows students to say what is currently going on (the “ing”) TSWBAT:   State what they are currently doing in class & tell the conditions your partner likes when they study (When ___ is studying, he/se likes to…) Language Objective:  I can create sentences that describe what I imagine specific famous people might be doing right now using the present progressive

Warm-up:   none (quiz) • Present:  • present progressive lesson • Participate:  • take notes & answer questions • Practice  • write sentences telling what you think the famous people might be doing right now using the prompts in exercise 5-31 (p 177) • Personalize: Write a sentence telling what you are doing in class right now & report what your partners likes when he/she is studying (quiet, music). • Evaluation:Libro 5-31, 5-33 + MSL 5:45-48

Present Progressive • Is used to say what is happening right now. • Rosa is singing. • We are eating. • To form the present progressive, you must combine a form of “estar” with the endings –ando (-ar) /-iendo (-er/-ir). • “estar” + root(-ando/-iendo) • Rosa estácantando. • Nosotrosestamoscomiendo.

  6. Try it: • I am writing. • I am • Estoy • Escribir • Iendo • Estoy escribiendo. • You are talking. • You are • estás • Hablar • Ando • Estás hablando.

Tomar en nota: • If the stem of an “-er” or “-ir” verb ends in a vowel (leer): • Form the present participle by changing the “I” in “iendo” to a “Y” • Estoy leyendo. • I am reading. • The verbs IR and VENIR are not usually used in the present progressive. • Use simple present instead: • ¿Vienes a la fiesta? • No, voy a la biblioteca.

  9. Translate (warm-up) • -ar = -ando /-ir or –er = -iendo • I am studying. (estudiar) + • Estoy estudiando • Juan is reading. (leer) • Juan está leyendo • We are eating pizza. (comer) • Ana and Beatriz are driving. (conducir) • The cafeteria is serving soup. (servir = e-i)
