  1. Nanoscale Modulated Structures in Li-based PerovskitesPeter K. Davies, University of Pennsylvania, DMR 0704255 A major goal in nanoscale science is realizing structures where the organization of the constituent nano-building blocks is perfect, periodic and functionally modulating. The objective of this project is to design ceramic materials with periodic phase-separated nanostructures where the phases comprise compositional and functional contrast and the structure retains stability at elevated temperature. “Nanocheckerboard” structures that satisfy these criteria were initially discovered in lithium- based perovskites such as (Nd,Li)TiO3. We have recently discovered the palette of checkerboard-forming chemistries can be extended to sodium-based compositions, opening avenues to a completely new range of chemistries and properties.   2. Nanoscale Modulated Structures in Li-based Perovskites Peter K. Davies, University of Pennsylvania, DMR 0704255 Broader impacts; Education and Outreach. This grant supported the training of undergraduate and graduate students in the fabrication and characterization of nano-structured oxide ceramics. A Ph.D graduate of this project, Beth Guiton, has now accepted a faculty position at the University of Kentucky. The PI and his graduate students participate in a variety of outreach programs aimed toward promoting nanoscale science and engineering. The most recent of these is the teaming of the PI with neighboring institutions to promote the “Making Stuff” PBS Nova series scheduled for broadcast in 2011. This major outreach event will feature a “Materials Day” aimed toward promoting awareness of materials to the general public and local school students and teachers. This will feature contributions from the participants of this NSF grant. A copy of a recent press release is provided on the left.
