  1. Arun Prakash Banaras Hindu University Low Mass Vector Meson at FAIR

  2. Outline • Introduction • Why to study Low Mass Vector Meson(LMVM) • How to measure LMVM • Past Experiments to detect them • How we can Detect them in FAIR

  3. Types of mesons Type S L P J JP Example Pseudo Scalar Meson 0 0 − 0 0− Pion, Kaon ,Eta Meson ,B Meson,D Meson Pseudo vector meson 0 1 + 1 1+ h1(1170),b1(1235), a1(1260),K1(1270), K1(1400) ρ -meson,ω-meson,ϕ-meson J/Ψ-meson Vector meson 1 0 − 1 1− Scalar meson 1 1 + 0 0+ K0*(1430) Tensor meson 1 1 + 2 2+ f2(1270)

  4. Why to study low mass vector mesons In heavy ion collisions, low mass vector mesons provide a clean signal for studying • Chiral symmetry restoration and/or in-medium modification

  5. Restoration of Chiral Symmetry

  6. Expected mass-modification of Light Vector Meson (LVM) <qq> condensate depend on temperature and density Some models predict the mass modification of LVM on hot/dense matter RHIC R. Rapp (Nucl. Phys A661(1999) 238c ~ hadron mass

  7. How to measure LMVM in High energy experiments LMV has hadronic and leptonic decay channels Di-lepton channel is good probe lepton does not interact with the strong coupled medium Leptons carry clean information of LMV Other candidate Collision broadening (hadronic many-body scheme) e+ K+   K- e-

  8. Results from different past experiments • Famous CERES results • enhancement in the pair yield • A probe of Chiral symmetry restoration and/or medium modification • Only hadronic decays so far at RHIC • rp+p- • STAR (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 092301) • f K+K- • PHENIX (nucl-ex/0410012) • STAR (nucl-ex/0406003) • Lepton-pair measurement is demanding • should provide information on space-time evolution at RHIC, which might be very different from SPS • mass shift vs broadening R. Rapp (Nucl. Phys A661(1999) 238c

  9. “combinatorial pairs” total background S/B ~ 1/500 Irreducible charm background all signal charm signal How to measure low-mass pairs • At PHENIX, R&D efforts to develop a Dalitz rejecter, in order to manage combinatorial backgrounds • HBD (hadron Blind Detector) is a strong candidate • UV photon detector • with CsI cathode • CF4 gas radiator • Ne(Cherenkov) > Ne(ionization)

  10. The CBM Muon Detection system Fe 20 20 20 30 35 100 cm ≡ 13.5 λI ≡ 7.5 λI low-mass vector meson measurements (compact setup)
