  6. Spelling Checking your writing for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and usage • Spelling is important and misspellings can change the meaning of an entire sentence • Beware of common spelling mistakes • Homonyms can be your worst nightmare • were/ we’re, there/their/they’re, too/to/two • Past tense can change spelling too! • run  ran, stop  stopped, pray  prayed • “i before e except after c” is a good rule to follow, too • “B” is not the same as “P”, please be careful (same with “D” & “T”) • Remember some letters have more than one sound, like: “G”, “Th”, “C”

  7. Grammar Checking your writing for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and usage • Subject-verb agreement is important or the readers might not understand who is doing what • Becca Teacher are the best teacher EVER! • Verb tense should be consistent throughout the paper • BT lived in India. She is killing an elephant. She met the elephant out shopping. • Be very careful with word order, it can change the meaning • Basic sentence order is “SUB + VERB + OTHER STUFF” • See the photograph above • No run-ons or fragments please! • That five line long sentence you have, break it down • One word sentence? I don’t think so Joe!

  8. Punctuation Checking your writing for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and usage • Apostrophes ( ’ ) are for possession and contractions • Becca Teacher’s classes are really fun! • They’re going to the movies • Commas ( , ) have rules that you MUST FOLLOW • Lists: BT teaches grammar, writing, literature, social studies, and GP. • Combining two complete sentences: I went to the store, and bought a new dress • Introductions to sentences: Once upon a time, there was a little girl… • Questions get question marks ( ?) • Exclamations get exclamation marks ( ! ) • Sentences get periods, or full stops ( . )

  9. Usage & Other Handy Hints Checking your writing for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and usage • Make sure you know the correct meaning of the phrases and words you are using (this is usage) • Capital letters • The first word in each sentence and all proper nouns • Indentation • Every time a new paragraph begins • NO SLANG • This isn’t the internet, plz and u are not actual words and definitely not to used in writing • Title: you need it

  10. Proofreading Symbols Identifying the purpose and use of each symbol

  11. Proofreading Train • Break into groups • Pass your papers to the group to the left • Read each word and sentence carefully • Use the proofreading symbols for any corrections that may be needed • After 5 minutes pass the paper to the group to the left • We will do this until you receive your papers back • Re-write your essays with all of the revisions and proofreading corrections included on the provided sheet.
