  1. Territorial Acquisitions

  2. So, what’s going on with your maps?

  3. Territorial Acquisition • Florida • Spain owned it • Gave it to U.S. through an agreement • Agreement was reached when Seminole Indians (living in Spanish Florida) started harassing American settlers in Georgia (the neighbor to the north)

  4. Territorial Acquisitions • Texas: • Texas was part of Mexico • American settlers moved there and ended up fighting with the Mexicans (the Alamo) • They lost the Alamo fight but eventually became their OWN NATION • But the, the U.S. “annex” Texas to make it part of the union in 1846

  5. Territorial Acquisitions • Oregon • The Brits kept Oregon Territory after the Revolutionary War • But after the War of 1812 the U.S. claimed the territory • The U.S and Brits fought over it and eventually reached an agreement in which the U.S. got half of the territory in 1846 • That half is now the present-day states of Oregon. Washington, Idaho

  6. Territorial Acquisitions • Mexican Cession(Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, CA) • In the 1840s the U.S. and Mexico went to war over land disputes • Where did the border of Texas lie? • The U.S. won and gained a huge portion of land known as the “Mexican Cession” • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo • Present day: Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California • Not long after, California became a formal state in the Union (1849 after the Gold Rush)
