Cyanide Fishing in Indonesia • Cyanide Fishing Video • Poison is used to capture large live reef fish to sell to restaurants in Hong Kong & for use in aquariums. • It is illegal, but DEMAND makes the prices worth the risks. • When they deplete the reserves of one area, they move on to another • It is very destructive because the poisons kill other fish & disrupt the balance of the living coral reefs.

  3. Indonesia needs to be most careful about regulation of these fishing practices because they have so much coastline. • Their natural boundaries are with the oceans!

  4. Ring of Fire • the ring of fire causes problems in this area such as • tsunamis • volcanoes • earthquakes

  5. Modification of the Environment • this is an example of agricultural practices in Vietnam • this is a rice paddy

  6. Religion in Southeast Asia • they’re predominantly Buddhist and Muslim because of the trade routes throughout history

Kombai People • The Kombai are a group of people who live in the forested areas of Indonesia. • they are nomadic hunters and gatherers (roughly 4,000 of them) • Deforestation is becoming a huge issue because the government is allowing companies to come in & cut down the trees • the Kombai need the trees to survive, but the government sees the trees as an economic resource.

  8. Kombai adapt to the environment: • storing water in shells • building houses to stay away from mosquitos & floods • they use stones to make axes

  9. they’re subsistence farmers focusing on rice and pigs • they eat grubs from the ground • they live in the trees and defend their territories from invaders

  10. The Indonesian government has encouraged business to move into the forested areas to cut the timber. • Can you think of a positive and negative consequence for this action by the Indonesian government?

  11. Economics in Southeast Asia • Economics in Southeast Asia • Governments used to have a lot more control over their economies than they do today. Things have changed. Let’s try to figure out why….

  15. ASEAN • ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations • MAIN GOALS • accelerate economic growth • increase social progress • promote cultural development among its members • protect the region • provide peace and stability

AFTA • the AFTA or Free Trade Area is an area whose main objective is to increase ASEAN’s competitive edge as a production base for the world market • they integrate trade by eliminating tariffs for members • Together the ASEAN and AFTA establish a free trade area because of the need for GLOBALIZATION

  17. Make a connection • Africa & SE Asia both have a history of colonization by countries such as France, Great Britain & the USA. However, the economies of SE Asia are flourishing while many nations in Africa are not developing. What is the reason for this difference?

  19. CONCLUSION • Recent changes to economic policies have reduced government control and increased private sector control of the economy. • SE Asia has become a key player in the world trade market and is growing economically.

Find out what type of economic system they have. • Find data on: • where they fall on the HDI • percentage of urbanization • life expectancy • enrollment in schools • official religions • Find 3 American companies that do business in your country and draw their logos
