  2. General Isotopes used in Treatment • A medical isotope is a radioactive substance used in treating diseases. • The energy that is given off by radioisotopes is very effective in attacking diseased cells, such as cancer. • Radioisotope treatments can be delivered in various ways

  5. Iodide-131 • Iodide-131 is available in vials as liquids or capsules • Will treat hyperthyroidism and some forms of thyroid cancer • The Thyroid is the targeted use for Iodide-131

  6. Thyroid Cancer • Cancerous cells that originate in a persons thyroid gland, which is around the neck • May occur from radiotherapy to the neck or radiation exposure • Treated by taking Iodide-131 through ingestion or surgery and cutting off the tumor

  7. Hyperthyroidism • Causes include: Iodide overdose, ironically, Inflammation of the thyroid, tumors of the testes or ovaries and taking large amounts of the thyroid hormone • An overproduction of thyroid hormones. • Sudden weight loss, irregular heart rate, irratibility

  8. Treatment of Hyperthyroid • Radioactive Iodide-131 slows down the overproduction of thyroxine • Swallow a prescribed dose of Iodide-131

  9. Risks of Iodide-131 • Taking Iodide-131 may cause Wolff-Chaikoff effect, Jod-Basedow phenomena, trigger or worsen Hyperthyroidism • Though in medicinal purposes radioactivity chances may be small • The body eliminates radioactivity over time                  
