Perhaps the best that a historian can do is to report both the terrible scale of sacrifice (2,300 victims reported by Friar Diego Duran in one day) and the dignity and honor accorded the single warrior captive. It is hard, however, not to be judgmental.

Number of reasons for Aztec sacrifice: paying a debt to the gods, political control of neighbors through terrorism and population control in a crowded region.
