  2. Application Service Process Professional School Secondary Application Primary Application Interview Service processes the primary application. Once this processing is complete, the Service sends the primary application to the schools selected by the applicant. At this point, the school takes over the application. Upon invitation from the school: Submit additional letters of recommendation Submit additional writing samples Send updated transcripts if necessary Pay additional application fee if required Schedule interview date upon invitation from the school Complete online application Send college transcripts Letters of Recommendation sent here Pay application fee

Typical Timeline • May/June: service opens for you to begin filling out application • June: service goes LIVE and will accept applications • Apply early; many programs work on rolling admissions • Deadlines around October for some services or schools • Consider Early Admission Program • August-November: interview • December-April: wait for decision

  5. What each service needs • Each service is slightly different, but all will require similar materials • Transcripts for every school attended (or for all college credit) • Personal Statements • Standardized test scores • Recommendation letters • Resume/Experience

  6. Personal Statement Information • http://www.essayedge.com/medical/essayadvice/course/lessonone.shtml • Be personal, tell about you • Tell a coherent story, not just a list of experiences • Write well! Use proper grammar…the texting revolution.

  7. Standardized tests • MCAT >30 • DAT average >20 • Vet GRE >600V and >700Q • PT GRE >500V and >500Q • OAT >330 If your scores are below these, DON’T APPLY YET!

Recommendation Letters • All Services Accept Electronic Letters • submit letters when you apply through the application service (print off or email matching form) • Committee Letters for academics • ****Some issues with IU med**** • ****Some issues with DO programs**** • Can use individual letters if you prefer • Some schools don’t accept committee letters…check with the schools! • Letters of support from professionals • Work experience, shadowing, mentoring, etc.

  9. Recommendation Letters • Committee Letter • One letter containing comments from a committee of evaluators • Composite letter • A bundle of individual letters sent as one file or one paper copy.

Recommendation Letters • At Butler • Last year for Committee Letter Process • Cathy Holland will coordinate • Select and ask a professor to write your committee letter • Fill out CHASE worksheets (available now) • http://www.butler.edu/pre-graduate-advising/pre-health/committee-letter-forms.  • Understand the requirements for your program • Individual Letters – a better choice?? • Ask at least one science and one non-science faculty member to write a recommendation letter • Outside of Butler • Ask for additional letters of support from external contacts

Issues with IU Med • You will fill out a form for IU Med • Identify the one science faculty and one non-science faculty that will be used for evaluation • Work with your committee letter writer to ensure these comments are included in your letter • Only these comments (and the opening and closing paragraphs) will be viewed by the review committee. • Also send a letter from Student Affairs on current academic standing.

What to do now: • Do your research (MSAR, etc) • Decide if you should apply • Get familiar with the application service website • Get unofficial copies of ALL transcripts • Letters of Recommendation… • Refine your personal goal statement • Develop a resume of activities and accomplishments • Start working on the application as soon as it becomes available on-line!
