Our Café • Our Café is a Cisco IBSG (Internet Business Solutions Group) sponsored project to put Cisco TelePresence units in public settings in order to observe how people use them • Our Café is as much a social experiment as it is a technical one • The project will eventually deploy Cisco TelePresence units in cafés in cities around the globe but phase 1 has the more modest goal of implementation in 3 universities: NYU (New York University), University of the Arts, London and hopefully KUSTAR (Khalifa University of Science and Technology) Abu Dhabi, UAE • Phase 1 of the project will leverage existing NRENs (National Research & Education Networks) for connectivity

Our Café – Phase 1 Breakdown Phase 1 will be rolled out in several stages • Stage 1) Back-to-back TP set up on each campus • Stage 2) A triangle of TP connectivity between New York, London, and Abu Dhabi • Stage 2) will be “re-configured” several ways as part of the experiment: • As a pure “Always On” triangle with 2 TP units in each city facing two other cities with a TP call up 24 hours a day • With “Shift Calls” – to maximize communication during hours when people are awake and in the cafés • With dial up calls between cafés • With dial up calls between cafés and other university TP rooms • With multi-point calls between cafés

Our Café & NLR • The effort to enable dial up calls between cafés, dial up calls between cafés and other university TP rooms, and multi-point calls between cafés, can benefit greatly from collaboration with, and support from, NLR • Our Café will take advantage of NREN connectivity for phase 1 of the project and NLR has the most advanced TelePresence infrastructure to date. • NLR support of this project will enable more interesting experiments and will expand the reach of Our Café connected TP units to the Global Research & Education TelePresence Community

Our Café & NLR • Under the proposed scenario Our Café TP units would implement a numbering plan that is complementary to NLR’s and utilize NLR’s Session Border Controller and Multi-Point Switch • As the Our Café project grows it would have to restructure it’s architecture but hopefully both it’s connectivity to NLR and it’s collaboration with NLR and NLR member universities would continue
