  1. Week of: February 3rd – February 7th News to Know Rowdy Readers Tomorrow is the Holmes School Pancake Breakfast. A great breakfast will be served by staff and parents starting at 9:00 tomorrow and ending at 11:00. Come on out for a great school/family event! Thank you to everyone who met with me over the last couple weeks for conferences. Having these discussions really helps with our parent/teacher relationship. If you have any additional questions please let me know. Tuesday is the 100th day of school!!! We will have a small celebration in the afternoon on that day. Some staff and students will also be dressing up like they are 100 years old, your child is welcome to join in if they would like. Next Friday is Valentine’s Day! We will have a party in the classroom on Thursday with a game, craft and snack. We will also have a chance to pass out personal valentines. If you choose to participate in the passing out of valentines, please make sure that you have enough for everyone in the class (20 students) and please no food or candy included. Contact me if you have any questions. • This week we began a unit that focuses on neighborhoods and communities. We read some great books, had great discussions and did some fun activities. This week we really focused on what the relationship is between illustrations and the text. We also focused on the characters, settings and major events. To help with these skills we read: • Russ and the Firehouse • In the Neighborhood • Places in the Neighborhood • The Black Cat • Let’s Look at a Map • We also were busy with some new words. We added five new vocabulary words and two new sight words. The sights words that we added were “when” and “are”. Remember these should be recognized by sight. This list is now up to 21 words. The vocabulary words that we added were: borrow, equipment, frequently, neighborhood and organize. Remember these words are meant to improve oral vocabulary. Math Madness Upcoming Dates This week in math we worked a lot on basic addition problems. We used manipulative to picture the problems, whiteboards to write the problems and iPads applications to play some whole group games. We also are getting excited for the 100th day of school so we made ice cream cones with 100 sprinkles on top! Saturday, February 8th: Pancake Breakfast Tuesday, February 11th: 100th day of school!
