  1. Back to School Night – New Assessment and Grading Policy

Board Policy • On April 24, 2012 the MVLA School Board adopted a policy that will enable Los Altos and Mountain View High Schools to align assessment practices and ensure fairness between teachers and classes and each school site. • At MVHS, the new policy is being implementedwith input from departments and course teams. • The staff at MVHS believes that the changes will address problems of inequity at the school.

  3. What the new system is all about The changes all center around one thing: • The extent to which students make progress on the Standards including State, National Common Core and College Board standards

  4. MVHS Changes include: Changes BENEFITS Equal opportunity to demonstrate learning for all students taking the same course. The meaning of students’ final grades is consistent across course sections. • Students taking the same course will take the same summative assessments on the key standards for that course. • All teachers of the same course will use the same grading scale to calculate final grades.

  5. MVHS Changes include Changes benefits Motivates students to focus on their learning. Encourages students to keep trying. Content grade will more accurately reflect student’s understanding. Encourages and rewards good work habits. • Students will have multiple opportunities to practice and improve performance on key standards. • Teachers of the same course will develop a “work habits” standard which will be assessed separately from content or skill standards.

  7. What it looks like in World Language Work Habits will represent 10% of the students’ grades. • Students in WL classes will be assessed on 4 critical skills: • Reading • Writing • Listening • Speaking

  8. What it looks like in JP 1-3,4AP Work Habits will represent 10% of the students’ grades. After assessments have been scored, students will be informed how many revision opportunities and how much time they have to complete them. • Students in WL classes will be assessed on 4 critical skills: • Reading -22% • Writing -23% • Listening -22% • Speaking -23%
