  1. RECEP (Ray) CAKIR • The Pennsylvania State University, PhD, 2005 • Senior Scientist, Lead Geophysicist - 4th year – Washington State Department of Natural Resources - Geology and Earth Resources • Current Project (relevant to IRIS data): • Earthquake focal depth determination by using spectral methods • Automatic determination of pP-P and/or sP-P focal depth phase directly form waveforms. • Use Cepstral Stacking Method (CSM) • Successive and overlapping windows (long enough to capture depth phases) applied to events recorded in the regional seismic network. • Applications are currently shown on single stations and stacking over an array will be tested. • Regional and local quadrangle mappings (use the same methodology for moderate events to better determine the fault geometries)

  2. R. Cakir current or planned data processing Download regional waveform data (for events magnitude 3.5 to 6 (better results for this magnitude range) Apply Cepstral Stacking Method on the recorded events for individual stations 1) use regional distances (>500 ) (good enough to capture pP in Pand P-coda) 2) Try same process over an array and stack the cepstrums over an array 3) Read two-way time on cepstrum and calculate focal depth – for average crustal velocities in the region. identify tools and an/or analysis packages used (or plan to use) Tools: SAC (seismic analysis code) scripts- I am running a macro for the single channel analysis GIS mapping (ArcGIS software) – for station mapping and other local (site) conditions and velocity maps plans for near future data processing and analysis • Try the same calculations over an array. Then make these calculations automatic for quick focal depth determination. • use the same calculation for after shocks (i.e., of Haiti eq.) to track the rupture propagation. Other future possible data processing/project 1. Frequency-dependent site amplification response for both body and surface waves-- 2. By accounting for the site amplification at each station more reliable determinations of frequency-dependent attenuation for different arrivals (Pn, Pg, Sn, Lg and surface waves) can be made, and in turn allow improved source characterization when attenuation and site terms are accounted for. 3. If array stations are close enough together locally, various array-processing techniques can be applied to enhance S/N for weak events and assess multi-pathing from different source locations to the sub-array. 4. Using regional Magnetotelluric data- determine conductive regions - supportive to geothermal exploration program and magma vs. geotehrmal reservoir relationships.. MT data processing ..
