  1. LEARNING GOAL • I will observe structures and behaviors of a multicellular organism (gastropod). • I will design and conduct an experiment (safely and appropriately) to determine environmental preferences of land snails.

  4. LIFE ON EARTH • There are 5 primary groups of life called kingdoms. • Monera (bacteria) • Protists (single-celled) • Fungi (yeast, mushrooms) • Animals • Plants • We are going to study the animal kingdom now.

  5. ANIMAL KINGDOM • What are some of the animals you are familiar with? • You are familiar with some animals, but did you know insects, clams, and spiders are all animals too?

  6. ANIMAL KINGDOM • Every organism is a member of one of the 5 kingdoms. Most of the Monera, Protista, and Fungi are microscopic. The large organisms we are most familiar with are members of the other two kingdoms, plants and animals. Generally speakjng, if a large organism is not a plant, it is probably an animal. Insects, worms, clams, snails, birds, squids, crabs, snakes, frogs, and spiders are all animals. Humans are animals too.

  7. Where do snails live? What do snails eat? How do snails get their shells? How do snails move?

  8. HANDLING SNAILS • Snails are living creatures, we must handle them CAREFULLY 

  9. SNAIL OBSERVATIONS • Observe snails in containers first • Carefully remove them from the containers like I showed you and continue observing. • Some shells may be thin. Handle them gently and DON’T DROP THEM! • Keep track of your snails, making sure they don’t creep off the edge of the table.

  10. FLASHLIGHTS • Get a flashlight for your group and use it for your observaitons.

  11. QUESTIONS • Did the snail respond in any way to the light? • Were you able to see any structures using the light that you could not see without it? • Can you see inside the shell with the light? • I will turn out the lights now. You look for the snail’s internal structures using the flashlights.

  12. OBSERVATIONS • What structures did you observe? • How does the snail move? • What did you find out when you used the flashlight

WORD BANK • Foot-the muscular main part of the body of the snail on which it glides. • Tentacles-the four feeler-like structures that the snail can retract into its head. • Shell-the hard protective case the snail can withdraw into. • Heart-the pulsing structure inside the shell that pumps blood.

  14. What questions were you able to answer? Do you still have unanswered questions? What new questions do you have? How could you find answers to some of these questions?
