  1. Introduction to IE 399 • Minimum of 20 consecutive business days except for official holidays • Some companies require longer durations • Manufacturing or Service organization • A positive evaluation by the company • An interpretive technical essay • Project: Solution to a practical IE problem

Administrative Issues (Prior to Fall 2010) • You need to find a company • By yourselves • Relatives, friends, acquaintances, etc. • Application to companies through their web pages • Through the dean’s summer practice office • Correspondence: Room No: EA412 Duygu Musaoğlu • The companies requesting summer trainees contact the dean’s office • Ms. Musaoğlu announces these company requests as they are received, to the students on their webpagehttp://mfstaj.bilkent.edu.tr:8080/student/index.jsp • The students are selected via a lottery draw • Through our department’s resources • Our department has agreements with a number of companies • The name of the companies and the selection criteria will be announced through our web page

Administrative Issues (Prior to Fall 2010) • Get your company approved • If the company is not listed among the “approved companies”, then we MUST get your company approved by course coordinators • Pick the sealed envelope from Ms. Musaoğlu • “Staj Değerlendirme Formu” • The latest pick up date of the envelopes isone week before your summer training start date • In the first day of your summer practice, hand the sealed envelope to your supervisor in the company • Your supervisor will fill in these forms and post them via mail or you can hand the sealed envelope to Ms. Musaoğlu personally

Academic Issues (During the Fall Semester) • We address academic questions relating to the content of the technical report • Reports are evenly distributed among all faculty members • Each faculty member evaluates the reports assigned to him/her by taking assistance from a graduate student • Course coordinators: • IE 299: Figen Eren; IE 399: Osman Alp.

  5. Requirements • Prerequisites: IE 299 • The sealed envelope (Staj Değerlendirme Formu) must be received by the Dean’s Office no later than the sixth Monday of Fall Semester • Deadline for submitting the reports is the third Monday of Fall Semester • Exact date is announced at the start the semester • The students who receive an "unsatisfactory" (U) grade repeat the summer training during the next summer • Re-registers to the course in the next Fall semester • Summer training during the winter break is not allowed • Two summer practices can be conducted in one summer

Recommendations • Project either assigned by the supervising engineer, or proposed by the student and approved by company • A project in which you can use the tools and methods of IE • Project to be completed onsite • Go over the “Summer Practice Evaluation Form” before visiting the company and writing your report • Selection of a well motivated problem • A good problem definition • This semester two students failed because their project did not meet our standards.

  7. Grading of The Report - 1 • Reports are evaluated by the faculty members and/or the graduate teaching assistants • At the end of the first evaluation, if the student receives a grade • Below 40: Fail in the report evaluation and Unsatisfactory in the course. • Between 40 and 69, inclusive or less than 50% performance in some class of criteria (i.e., Format and Organization, Language, Content): Rewrite in the report evaluation following the feedback provided. • Greater than or equal to 70 with a minimum of 50% performance in each class of criteria: Pass in the report evaluation

  8. Grading of The Report - 2 • Those students who receive a Rewrite in the first evaluation submit their revised reports in two weeks after the notification. The same faculty member evaluates their reports again • Below 70 or less than 50% performance in some class of criteria : Fail in the report evaluation and Unsatisfactory in the course. • Greater than or equal to 70 with a minimum of 50% performance in each class of criteria: a Pass in the report evaluation

Summer Practice Evaluation Form -1 • FORMAT AND ORGANIZATION (20%) • Cover Page • Page Limits and Numbering (5-10 pages) • Margins and Alignment • Section Division and Headings • Appendix (Should be in English, cited in text, no handwriting allowed) • References (Uniformity of format, cited in text)

  10. Summer Practice Evaluation Form - 2 • LANGUAGE (10%) • Grammar • Spelling and Punctuation • Technical Terminology • Style (Conciseness and clarity, use of formal language)

  12. Restructuring the Course • Currently, we are restructuring the summer practice course according to the feedback we received from our students and the companies • We are designing new programs

  13. “Focused” Summer Training • To fulfill the requirements of this program, the student will work in a company • in a well-defined (on-going) project • under the supervision of an IE • in a multidisciplinary team • at least two months during the summer • performing IE related tasks

  14. “Focused” Summer Training • Currently, we are communicating with a number of companies to initiate this program • Some companies already initiated such programs by themselves, e.g. Eczacibasi • You might also search for such companies by yourselves

  15. Linking IE399 to IE477/478 • We want to enhance the link between IE399 and IE477/478 projects • There might two way links: • A prelude to IE477/478 • Follow-up for recently finished projects

  16. Prelude to IE477/478 Projects • An IE477/478 Project can be conducted in the company that you are having your summer training • We might give a priority to your team to pick that project

Prelude to IE477/478 Projects • An extension of the project that you work on could be defined as IE477/478 project • A completely different project can also be defined • Whichever project is defined, you will be one step ahead since • You know the company and the people • You know the current system • You know how decisions are made, how operations are conducted, etc.

  18. Follow-up for IE477/478 Projects • In IE477/478 projects, the requirements are to define, solve and implement a real life project in an organization • Implementation takes in April and May • Sometimes, the semester ends before the implementation completely accomplished • Implementation phase is one of the most difficult part of our profession

Follow-up for IE477/478 Projects • We are planning to arrange summer training positions in some of the companies that senior students are currently conducting an IE477/478 project • We will send juniors to complete and support the implementation phases • In this way, new IE477/487 projects can also spin off from these projects
