  1. Contract Year 1 ReviewForces Modeling and Simulation (FMS) David R. Pratt, PhD SAIC 15 May 2002

  2. FA Technical Overview • Overview of FA Vision • To leverage the experience and techniques developed by the HPC community to improve the FMS support to the operational warfighter. • Conduct militarily relevant research and transition the technologies to operational programs. Contract Year 1 Review

  3. FA Technical Overview(Activities) • Overview of Efforts for Contract Year 1 • UAP Standup and Workshop • Outreach to programs • HPC RTI Review • Project Solicitation • ASC Onsite recruiting • Publications • Awareness as part of marketing calls Contract Year 1 Review

  4. FA Technical Overview(Outcome of UAP Meeting) • Definition of the relevant FMS community • We are interested primarily on the those codes that model complete things and are focused on the effects on the tradeoffs and employments as they reflect in tactical and strategic outcomes. • Revised Vision • Leverage the experience and techniques developed by the HPC community to enhance holistic M v. N codes and increase their relevance and responsiveness to the warfighter • Conduct FMS relevant research and transition the technologies to operational programs. • Revised Project Emphasis Areas and Criteria • FMS relevance • Alignment with strategic thrust areas • Cross functional with other CTA areas • Addresses a critical user need • Strong operational user focus and involvement • Demonstration based results Contract Year 1 Review

  5. FA Technical Overview(Revised Technology Areas) • Strategic Focus • Areas • User Outreach • Technology Transfer • Technology Exploration • Portability • Scalability • Rapid response / deployment • Data Management FY02 FY03 FY04 FY05 FY06 FMS 001 FMS Onsite FMS Onsite FMS 004 FMS-TT FMS 002 FMS Onsite FMS-P FMS-S FMS 004 FMS-RRD FMS-DM Contract Year 1 Review

  6. Technical (Metrics)(User Codes Impacted by PET) • SEDRIS Database code • It is being made more scaleable and responsive as a result of the PET Outreach Project • OneSAF Objective System code • The HPC concepts of data distribution and parallelism influenced the system design • Need for remote management utilities • WARSIM • Insights into the performance bottlenecks Contract Year 1 Review

  11. Project FMS 001, WTN Core/Project • Objective: Work outreach efforts to FMS, IMT & classified users and coordinate technology transfer activities • Funding Status: • 42% Expended through 31 Mar 2002 • P.I. : Roger Panton • Milestones/Due Dates/Status: • Supported IMT/FMS/ET FAPOCs white paper submittals • Supported IMT FAPOC proposal submittals • Outreach IMT briefing to JSF Program Office • Deliverables: • Weekly and Monthly Activity Reports • Progress Indicator Green Contract Year 1 Review

  12. SEDRIS Optimization (FMS 004) • Facilitate and promote use of HPC and distributed processing across SEDRIS community. • Fully funded • P.I.: Jon Watkins and Rob Cox • Milestones / deliverables: • May: Technical Approach (Yellow) (Slow start due to delayed funding) • July: Parallelized Sanity Checker (Green) • August: Performance Tests (Green) • September: Final report (Green) Contract Year 1 Review

  13. Invoice Status Contract Year 1 Review

  14. Core Financial Summary Contract Year 1 Review

  15. Staffing • 0% turn over • I’m still here • Admin position is a consolidation of support people • 50% of positions allocated are filled • Onsite at ASC is vacant • 100% of authorized positions are filled • Onsite position was held up due to budget cuts • Planned hiring date is now 1 Oct 2002 • Hiring summer intern to help with training program development Contract Year 1 Review

  16. Summary • Issues/concerns • To a large extent, we are trying to get a new community involved • Outside of BMDO and EADTB uses • Lack of on-site has slowed outreach and core activities • Contract transition with SAIC • Progress is slow, but we are making some • UAP is becoming more active • Intern will help with development of training materials Contract Year 1 Review
