B y exp 1 and 2 b doubles and a remains constant

You must determine determine the rate law for the following reaction from the experimental results given A + 3 B  AB3

Experimental Results

[A] M [B] M Rate [B]/s

Exp. 1 0.010 0.200 3.10 x 10 -5

Exp. 2 0.010 0.400 2.50 x 10 -4

Exp. 3 0.020 0.600 1.67 x 10 -3

[B] y - Exp 1 and 2

B doubles and A remains constant

The rate increases approximately 8 fold

therefore exponent y must be 3

B y exp 1 and 2 b doubles and a remains constant

Experimental Results following

[A] M [B] M Rate [B]/s

Exp. 1 0.010 0.200 3.10 x 10 -5

Exp. 2 0.010 0.400 2.50 x 10 -4

Exp. 3 0.020 0.600 1.67 x 10 -3

[A] x Requires calculation since no two experiments have the same concentration for B.

Solve for exponent x as an unknown using an equation

formed by the ratio of the two experiments and including the previously determined exponent.

Exp 30.00167 = k [0.020] x [0.600]3

Exp 2 0.00025 = k [0.010] x [0.400]36.68 = 2 x (3.375)

1.979 = 2 x x  1

B y exp 1 and 2 b doubles and a remains constant

A + 3 B following  AB3

Experimental Results

[A] M [B] M Rate [B]/s

Exp. 1 0.010 0.200 3.10 x 10 -5

Exp. 2 0.010 0.400 7.98 x 10 -4

Exp. 3 0.020 0.600 1.67 x 10 -3

rate = k [A] [B]3

Solve for k using one of the exp results

Exp 1 3.10 x 10 -5 = k [0.010] [0.200]3

k = 0.3875 = 0.39 M-3 s-1
