  1. Curriculum Proposal:Ethnic Diversity Through Immigration – “Embracing Our Differences: What Makes You, You” ED 200 Curriculum Project Spring 2006 Trinity College By: Tyler Berry & Julian Loo

Introduction • In this five day unit, fifth grade students will be learning about diversity though the study of immigration. • They will be engaging in hands-on activities, both individual and group, to help assist them in developing a strong understanding of the importance and meaning of these terms. • These activities will also promote and strengthen family and community relationships with the school.

  3. Objectives • Students will define “diversity” and “immigration” through class discussion calling on both linguistic and interpersonal skills. • Students will learn the proper way to conduct an interview stressing upon both interpersonal and linguistic communication skills. • Students will investigate their cultural backgrounds and present their findings to the class, further developing linguistic and interpersonal skills as well as intrapersonal skills. • Students will demonstrate an understanding and respect for diversity and immigration through presentation; this will call on interpersonal, intrapersonal and linguistic skills.

  6. Day 5 – “Culture Day” • Part 1-Kickoff- The teacher will organize both students and parents into one large group. Everyone will put their hands together in the middle of the classroom. Students and parents will observe the different colors, shapes, and sizes of each hand. This activity enforces the diversity in the classroom. • Part 2- First half of the classroom will do their presentations • Part 3-There will be an hour lunch break for the “Culture Lunch”, where parents will have helped organize and prepare different kinds of dishes for lunchtime. • Part 4- Second half of the classroom will do their presentations • Part 5- End- The teacher will enforce once more the meaning of diversity to the students and the parents. The teacher will then ask the students to think how the world would be if everybody was the same shape, color, and size. The teacher will make sure to impact and instill in the kids a respect and appreciation for differences within the world.

  7. Evaluation • Completion of assignments • Participation in discussion • Effort, creativity and quality of presentation • Overall understanding and connection to thematic unit
