As per Nigerian news headlines today online, Uber announced employee status for its UK drivers and the benefits include benefits like minimum wage, this has happened for the first time for this US giant. Uber mentioned that the drivers would receive a pension and vacation pay week after a ruling passed by the Supreme could and it could shake the gig economy of Britain for 5.5 million people.
According to a taxi app, this is a huge change in the company’s business model that claimed in front of the UK Supreme Court that their drivers were self-employed. Till Wednesday, in the UK itself, more than 70,000 drivers will be considered as workers will earn a national living wage with the help of Uber. The court passed this ruling last month that the drivers must get worker’s rights “This is a floor, not a ceiling, with drivers who can earn more.”
This decision put an end to a long battle between taxi and delivery company Silicon Valley and British divers. There would a slight rise in the minimum hourly wage in Great Britain from April to £ 8.91 (USD 12.37, EUR 10.40). Uber said that the drivers make £17 an hour on an average in London and around £14 in the rest of the UK, excluding the flexibility. According to Uber fighting for workers’ rights means the drivers will be able to earn along with having greater security and maintain a future with the flexibility which is important to the private rental industry. This was discussed with the number of drivers over the last few weeks and they were looking forward to these benefits without losing the flexibility. The increase in the Uber costing is because of the reason that there has been a decline in driver booking due to the Covid-19 pandemic however Uber Eats grocery delivery service has seen an increase during national lockdowns.
Uber is reaching out to different industries to help them raise a joint fund which will help Uber drivers to get more work from different apps and protect their added benefits of paid holidays. It turned out as the Deliveroo Food app was awaiting the ruling of the London Court of Appeals for collective bargaining rights. Earlier this month for European Union, it was announced by the Spanish Government that drivers can work for delivery companies like UberEats and Deliveroo as employees after complaints raised about their working conditions.
Prosecutors have instructed that Uber Eats and other food delivery apps treat their couriers as employees and not independent workers and were fined € 733 million for health and safety regulation, in Italy. An urgent international regulation was called for in the United Nations ensuring fair conditions for the worker who are paid on digital platforms and apps for delivering food.
