  4. Conflict Factor # 1 : Overpopulation- Sub-Saharan Africa has had huge population increases • ________countries of Africa have a population growth rate that is three percent or higher. What does this mean? • Population Doubling Time-is the time required for a country’s population to double in size • How do you calculate doubling time = 70/percentage growth rate • Calculate the population doubling time for your Sub-Saharan country

  5. When is an area considered “OVERPOPULATED”? • An area is overpopulated when the number of people in the area is too great for the area to “carry”. • What would you need to carry? • When an area’s “CARRYING CAPACITY” is too great it is OVERPOPULATED.

  6. What are the consequences of overpopulation? • Hunger • Pollution • CONFLICT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Conflict Factor #2: • Mono-economy- Most African countries rely on one major product for export. What is the problem • The country’s wealth is determined by the price other countries will pay for this product.   8. Conflict Factor #3 Africa’s industries and infrastructure are limited. • Only Fifteen percent of Africa’s workers have industrial jobs. • Why aren’t there more industries? • Industries are limited by limited infrastructure…lack of electricity, telecommunications and roadways.
