  2. Miep Giesand her Childhood • Miep Gies was born February 15, 1909, in Vienna Austria. • When she was five years old world war one began. Because of the food shortage she became ill. • When she was eleven years old her parents had another child (daughter). • With one more mouth to feed there was less and less food to were Miep was so ill if something didn’t happen she would die. • As a part of a relief program to help malnourished children, Miep was sent to live with a middle class Dutch foster family, in Leiden in Holland. • Her journey to her new home wasn’t easy they were shipped on trains to there destination. • She grew close to her foster family and stayed happily with them for the rest of her childhood.

  4. Miep gets married! • On July 16, 1941 Miep Santrouschitz married Jan Gies.

  5. War begins to worsen • On July, 5th 1942 the war began to worsen and the Franks had to go into hiding. Along with four others. • Miep Gies willingly agreed to help the Franks, Van Pels and the Mr. Dussle for more than two years by risking her life. By bringing them food, comfort, news from outside, and more. • They all stayed in the top of Mr. Franks office they called it the Secret Annex. It was unseen to the outside by a bookcase serving as a door.   6. Captured • On August 4th 1944 the Franks, Van Pels, and Mr. Dussel were took under arrest after two years of hiding in the Secret Annex. • That very day Miep found the Annex empty. Anne Frank’s Diary • Once the war ended Otto Frank was the only one to survive out of eight. • After the war Miep let Otto stay with her for the next seven years1980. • Miep returned Anne’s Diary to Otto. Together Miep and Otto were able to publish Anne’s Diary. • It today has been translated into 54 different languages and has sold over 25 million copies.

The teaching of others • After Anne’s death Miep traveled all over the United States and Europe speaking on behalf of the Anne Frank Center, an international organization dedicated to tolerance. • She became a kind of ambassador for the diary, traveling talking about Ann’s experiences and campaigning against holocaust denial. • She spoke to people across the world all the way up to her death.

  9. Growing Old • In January 1993 at the age of 87 Miep’s husband passed away. • In 1993 she received The Righteous Amongst the Nations Award. • Miep was known to have said, "I am not a hero. I stand at the end of the long, long line of good Dutch people who did what I did and more – much more – during those dark and terrible times years ago, but always like yesterday in the heart of those of us who bear witness." • Miep died in a nursing home after suffering a bad fall. • Miep died at the age of 100 on January 11, 2010.

  10. Fun Facts • Miep also let a young Jewish girl live with her during the war. This site also included great pictures of Miep Gies as well as the Franks and the Secret Annex and other things that had a great impact on Miep's life. The only bad thing about this site is that it was created about five years before Miep’s death so it doesn't include her death and things dealing with that. This site includes information about Miep and her kind hearted ways in helping others. But over all this site is a great site to find out information about a Miep Gies.
