  1. Further Development of GPCC products T. Fuchs, U. Schneider, A. Meyer-Christoffer, and B. Rudolf Global Precipitation Climatology Centre

  2. Further Development of GPCC products Overview Development of the data base Planned reanalyses of all GPCC products • New precipitation mean climatology so far 28,000 stations, 50,000 stations in the new mean climatology • First Guess and Monitoring Product new analysis technique using the climatology background • Full Data Product beginning 1901 (spatial data coverage higher than ever before) • 50-Year Climatology (1951-2000) so far 9,400 data time-series, 15,000 in the new data set Some applications of GPCC products

  3. GPCC data sources • Near real-time: • GTS SYNOP (DWD RTH Offenbach) • GTS CLIMAT (DWD RTH Offenbach) • GTS CLIMAT (JMA RTH Tokyo) • GTS CLIMAT (UKMO RTH Exeter) • SYNOP-based (NOAA RTH Washington) • Non real-time: • Additional data from ca. 180 countries • International project data (GEWEX-related and other) • Historical data collections (CRU, FAO, GHCN)

  4. GPCC Products New from Oct. 2005 on fraction of solid precipitation monthly precipitation total monthly precipitation anomaly number of stations per grid fraction of solid precipitation (%)

  5. Development of GPCC data base Database of different GPCC Products (added since Feb. 2005)

  6. Development of GPCC data base Database of different GPCC Products (added since Feb. 2005)

  7. Development of GPCC data base Increase of the number of station-months and decadal distribution

  8. Development of GPCC data base Full Data : 16,002 GHCN+FAO+CRU: 11,615

  9. Development of GPCC data base Full Data : 45,246 GHCN+FAO+CRU: 12,921

  10. Development of GPCC data base Full Data : 23,434 GHCN+FAO+CRU: 3,913

  11. Development of GPCC data base Full Data : 10,460 GHCN+FAO+CRU: 850

  12. Development of GPCC data base GPCC Climatological Means Monthly in-situ precipitation stations currently used as basis for anomaly analyses: Total number of stations: 25,642

  13. Development of GPCC data base GPCC Climatological Means Monthly in-situ precipitation stations to be usedin future as basis for anomaly analyses: Total number of stations: 50,026

  14. GPCC‘s mean precip climatology • Interpolation of climatological means (calendary months) from more than 50,000 stations world-wide - stations are used if at least 10 years of data available - expected to be finished in Nov. 2007 • As a follow up: The time-series of monthly gridded worldwide data will be created from anomalies at the stations and the new mean climatology as background map

  15. GPCC‘s Full Data Product New Full DataReanalysis (Version 4) optimized for high spatial density and accuracy designed for model verification and calculation of area-means • Content: • period Jan. 1901 up to Dec. 2006 • grid size 2.5°, 1° and 0.5° lat/lon • Data base: • 8,000 - 45,000 stations using the best of all sources (GTS, countries, CRU, FAO, GHCN) expected by the end of 2007

  16. New VASClimO Analysis New VASClimO 50-year Analysis (Version 2) homogeneity checked time-series, designedfor studies of climate variability and trends, • Content: • period Jan. 1951 up to Dec. 2000 (possibly 2005) • grid size 2.5°, 1° and 0.5° grid • Data base: • 15,000 selected stations with almost complete time-series • homogeneity tests applied / data homogenized • outliers detected and eliminated Expected by mid of 2008

  17. GPCC Products and User Applications • Drought monitoring • Assessment of low flow conditions • In situ reference for satellite-gauge combinations • Evaluation / verification of model results • Climate variability analysis and climate monitoring
