  1. ECT 437/537 Mission Statement “What does your company really create?”

  2. Mission Statement ? • A blend of “REALISM” and “OPTIMISM” Terms that generally oppose each other! Writing a great mission statement creates the “balance” between the “Realism” and “OPTIMISM”…… Design it to clearly communicate what you do in such a way that people can remember it and communicate this to others.

  3. Four Elements to consider….. • VALUE – why your product exists • INSPIRATION – inspire & encourage the team and customers • PLAUSIBILITY – completely reasonable • SPECIFICITY – relevant “a quality of being specific rather than general” • FIND a key “THEME” for your company!

  4. KEEP it SHORT & SWEET • Mission statements are: • Memorable and effective • Should double as your slogan • The purpose of your company

  5. Short term goals • Since this is a semester project, think of the short term goals (if it inspires you and your team then you can look at long term goals)! • Use global language indicative of your company's purpose, regardless of how much your company might expand into the future.

  6. Revisit it! • When you have completed your project and you believe it is ready for submission to be graded, revisit your mission statement! • You may want to tweak it just to be sure that it still the direction your company pursued.

  7. Examples of Good Mission Statements • The Humane Society: Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty. • Wounded Warrior Project: To honor and empower wounded warriors. • Ducks Unlimited conserves, restores, and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people. • GOOGLE : Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. • McDonald’s: McDonald's vision is to be the world's best quick service restaurant experience.  Being the best means providing outstanding quality, service, cleanliness, and value, so that we make every customer in every restaurant smile • CISCO: "Cisco enables people to make powerful connections – whether in business, education, philanthropy, or creativity. Cisco hardware, software, and service offerings are used to create the Internet solutions that make networks possible-providing easy access to information anywhere, at any time."
